96  WHERE SHE LIVED NOBODY KNEW

There was no cup; there was no wine
And yet her saloon was totally divine

And there was no lover pulling his hair
But it didn’t matter; she didn’t care

And where she lived, nobody knew
But her they all wanted to woo

And without her when they couldn’t sleep
They would sit all night and weep and weep

And their hearts she did like to break
And didn’t distinguish a toper from sheik

                        URDU POEM
                            GHAZAL

Go sab ko baham saaghar o baada toe naheen tha
Yeh shehr udaas itna ziaada toe naheen tha

Galioun maen phira kertay thay do chaar diwaanay
Her shakhs ka sadchaak libaada toe naheen tha

Manzil ko na pehchaanay reh e ishq ka raahi
Nadaan hi sahi, aisa bhee saada toe naheen tha

Thak ker yuin hi pal bhar kay liay aankh lagi thi
Soe her hi na uthhthhaen, yeh iraada toe naheen tha

Waaiz say reh o rasm rahi, rind say sohbat
Farq in maen koie itna ziaada toe naheen tha
