Born of Envy
Rated: E | Poetry | Contest Entry | #1788043
Envy through life's stages.
In my youth I felt a pining everywhere,
all the wants would open wide, and they would stare;
and what others had were wishes for my fair,
‘cause the grass is always greener over there.

I was lean and fast and limber as a teen,
and my academic slate was pretty keen;
but the discontent came knocking at the door,
with a welcome mat that said that there was more.

  And it’s good old born-of-envy in my bones,
  that’s the anxious feeling I have always known,
  just a voice of brass that speaks through megaphones...
  born-of-envy, come along, I’ll take you back home.

Now life’s scenery divides for middle man,
and the sighing heart reproves the one night stand;
but within the night there’s still the lust to dance,
yet when envy walks, it just wears better pants.

  And it’s good old born-of-envy in my bones,
  that’s the anxious feeling I have always known,
  just a voice of brass that speaks through megaphones...
  born-of-envy, come along, I’ll take you back home.

Now I get my coffee at a special rate,
look around, for jealousy it’s getting late;
and it’s good to walk composed and more serene,
with an older face no longer tinted green.

  It was good old born-of-envy in my bones,
  once an anxious feeling I had always known,
  once a plaintive voice that spoke through megaphones...
  born-of-envy, past it now, I’m going on home.
