Skia Kristal 1,930 words Riane (RHEE-an) still couldn’t believe that she had been foolish enough to recite an ancient spell she found in that old book without knowing what the words meant or what would happen if the spell actually worked. Now she was lost in a strange realm of magic, a place called Riga in the Kingdom of Jacarel in the realm of Kri Kivi. I deserve being trapped on Pandora. I always have to be by myself. Perhaps if someone had been with me when I found that dusty old tome, that person would have talked me out of using the spell. Riane felt her skin tingle the moment she entered the market. She hated when the wee hairs at the nape of her neck stood on end like a warning sign. BEWARE! Her inner voice screamed. Her tummy growled and she began looking for something sweet. Her body always craved sugar when she was nervous or upset. The gypsy, fortuneteller stepped from the shadows. Big gold rings hung from her tiny ears. She wore flame red lipstick and vivid purple eye shadow. She glanced a second time at the gypsy and shook her head. The wee woman’s purple, red and gold ankle length skirt swished as she moved, and she wore only a shawl as a coat and sandals despite the rain and chill. The wee female had a brand on her left wrist. The BEWARE! grew even louder. Riane started to go the other way. Yet the woman’s silver and gold bangle bracelets tinkled when she crossed the road. Riane knew she should walk the other way, yet something prevented her from doing so. She gasped when the seer’s eyes met her silvery blue ones. Instead of an old hag Riane saw a lovely woman with waits length black hair and large mink colored eyes. She felt like a giant towering over the small female, who barely stood five feet and weighed next to nothing. “You look as if you’ve seen a ghost, Riane.” “How do you know my name?” “Tis not important. Ye must seek the Skia Kristal (Sphere of Illusion). Or die.” “I don’t believe in this hocus pocus,” Riane said. “Go on your way and leave me alone.” “Magic rules Pandora in more ways than you can imagine.” “Do you have a name?” Riane asked. “Kalila (kah-LEE-lah).” “Kalila, why would I die if I don’t get the Skia Kristal?” “I spoke out of turn. The Skia Kristal can send you home.” Riane knew to sneak into Leila’s Mythical Garden was an offense punishable by death yet… Don’t listen to the fortuneteller. Going into the garden would be committing suicide. Riane’s inner voice whispered. “Givon (jee-VON) protects the Skia Kristal. I’m not fighting a griffin for an orb that I can’t use. Only those with magic can use the Sphere of Illusion,” Riane said. “Only a few folks know the located of the Crystal Cavern Library.” “Under the fountain at the center of Leila’s Mythical Garden. I can give you a sleeping spell to use on Givon.” “How does a gypsy possess such information?” “Tis not important.” What is this woman hiding? Why can‘t she go get this sphere herself? “Why should I do this for you? I don’t even know you.” “The Skia Kristal grants wishes. It can send you back to your own world.” A pang of homesickness shot through Riane. She knew the fortuneteller spoke falsely, yet… What if Kalila speaks the truth? NO! Riane’s, inner voice screamed. The fortuneteller lies. “How do I get pass Chaitra (SHAY-truh)? She’s the guardian to the Crystal Cavern Library,” Riane said. Kalila handed Riane an amulet. “This shall guide you straight to the Skia Kristal once you get under the fountain. Hold it in your left hand and just follow the light.” # # # # # Riane stood near the boundary to Leila’s Mythical Garden watching the guardians patrol. Her heart sank. She found that odd. Perimeter magic kept everything and everyone from entering the garden without permission, yet guardians walked the boundary. Had Queen Leila gotten wind of an attempt on the Skia Kristal? How do I get into the garden without getting caught? Riane watched for the remainder of the day, timing the guardians and keeping track of when the guardians changed patrols. She figured she had approximately seven minutes between each pass of the guardians to slip into the garden. The rising sun shall conceal me. # # # # # The cool morning breeze played with Riane’s platinum blonde hair. It flashed in the sunlight. She swallowed the lump in her throat. She crossed the boundary and headed toward the fountain that stood at the center of the garden. She knew if the guardians caught her, she’d be executed. Why did I allow Kalila to talk me into doing this? Riane made it to the fountain without any trouble, yet didn’t see an entrance to the hidden library. She circled the fountain several time and still couldn’t see a way into the library. Then the ground rumbled and a doorway popped open. A scholarly looking Druid stepped from the doorway, touched several rune carvings on the fountain and the door closed. Riane waited until the Druid disappeared from sight. She ran over to the fountain and touched the same runes and the door opened. She wiped her damp palms on her pale blue shirt. Swallowed the lump that threatened to choke her and stepped through the doorway. It closed with a small bang. Fear gripped her. Did anyone hear the door bang shut? Riane descended stone stairs that spiraled into darkness. A massive cavern with a dozen or more tunnels disappearing from the stone room that stood before her. Which tunnel leads to the Crystal Cavern Library and are there traps along the way? No, otherwise those who are allowed into the library would get hurt unless they knew how to avoid the dangers. Riane pulled the amulet out and did what Kalila told her to do. A faint golden beam pointed to a tunnel. The entry appeared to be covered with spider silk, yet she knew that wasn’t possible. She crossed the massive cavern to the tunnel, and stepped around the illusion of webbing and crept down the tunnel. The temperature dropped as she moved downward. Goosebumps danced along her arms underneath her shirt. She hugged herself for warmth. An eerie glow brought her to a halt. Riane peeked around the bend and gasped. Six fifty foot high, lavender crystal columns formed a semi-circle at the far side of the small cavern. She could see the entrance to the library beyond the columns. Is the glow emitting from the columns nature or magical? If magical what will it do to an intruder? A flash of silvery sheen came flying at Riane. She dunked just in time. Chaitra hovered before her. The wee silver faery could slip though a flute and not sound a note. Her gossamer translucent silver wings glowed with the same eeriness as the columns. A musical lilt filled the air. Its beauty halted Riane. A bolt of blue flashed passed her and stuck the ground next to her feet. “Fiddlesticks. I missed again,” Chaitra said. “Stop, human. Leila didn‘t give you permission to come into the library.” Raine wanted to run, yet knew she could never outrun a Silver Fae’s magic. She inched backwards a few steps. “What shall you do to me?” She eyed the seven-and-a-half inch tall Fae as fear gripped her heart. Mirth flashed through Chaitra’s storm sea, grey eyes. “I need to know why you risk your life sneaking in here before I pass judgment upon you.” Raine realized she could see through the wee Fae’s translucent icy blue, lace dress, yet it revealed nothing. Her throat, dry as a desert. She swallowed before speaking. “I came to look at the Skia Kristal. I’m told nothing on Pandora is more beautiful than the Sphere of Illusion.” “Try again.” “I came to steal the orb for a fortuneteller who claims it can send me home,” Riane said. “Come.” “Where are you taking me?” “To see Givon. He’s the Skia Kristal’s guardian and must decide your fate. I’m merely a warning guardian that alerts him to a possible theft.” Raine followed Chaitra into the Crystal Cavern Library. She didn’t have the words to describe the beauty of the inner cavern. Bookshelves carved from crystal disappeared beyond Riane’s sight. She realized that she wouldn’t want to be the person responsible for counting all the tomes, scrolls, tablets and etchings that contain zillion upon zillion words. The sheer size of the part of the library that she could see made her feel as if she were no larger than a dust mite. Without a sound the griffin stepped in front of Riane. She gasped and jerked back, landing on her fanny. The griffin laughed. “Get up, human.” Fear crept into her once again as she eyed the monster that towered over her. The griffin stood on the forearms and hindquarters of a lion. His majestic eagle’s head lowered to get a better look at her. She swallowed the knot that threatened to choke her. Givon cocked his horse-like ears as he studied her. His wings so beautiful an angel would be jealous of him. Kalila deceived me. First Chaitra tried to kill me with her magic. Now this griffin just may have me for lunch. If I ever see that gypsy again I just may wring her neck. “Are you Givon?” “Aye. I’m called Von among my friends. Chaitra claims you came to steal the Skia Kristal. Does she speak the truth?” Riane nodded. She noticed how the light danced off the russet color of Givon’s fur. She gasped when she saw the hints of pale blue and flashes of lavender. She wanted to ask Von what species of griffin he was, yet feared to. “An Agkelos Griffin.” “How did you…? Never mind. You can read my thoughts.” “Wise, yet foolish. The truth shall set you free. Pardon my theft of another’s words. What outrageous claim did Kalila make to convince you to sneak into the garden and risk your life to enter the library?” “The Sphere of Illusion could send me home.” She stepped back when she saw rage flood Von’s rich sable eyes. He fluttered his beauty angel like wings that caught the light. The sight made Riane weak in the knees. “The Skia Kristal is exactly what it is, a sphere of illusion. It creates illusions for mere winks of time, nothing more. Kalila got you to risk your life for an empty promise. What would you do with a sneak thief?” “Follow Leila’s command and have that person executed.” Raine felt her tears and tried to wipe them away before Von could see her shame and sense her terror. “Your honesty is refreshing. Punishment of those who seek to steal the Skia Kristal is at my digression. Since you told Chaitra and me the truth I shall spare you this time. Never return without Queen Leila’s permission.” “Why spare this foolish child?” Chaitra asked. “I know how it feels being trick into doing something one shouldn’t and paying an outrageous price for that error.” Riane hugged Von. “Thank you.” “Chaitra, take her to see Tayen’s young apprentice, Katja. Katja holds the knowledge to send you home.” “Von, is that wise?” Chaitra asked. “Don’t question my authority. Just do as I asked.” Chaitra nodded and had Riane follow her to meet with Katja. The End
