The answering machine started after the third ring.

“Hello, Jenny. This is Eileen with Management. The security company called this morning and said that the security gate is fixed now. It will close promptly at nine p.m. and open at seven a.m. If you see that the gate is still open after nine, please don’t hesitate to call me. And, again, let me apologize for this taking so long. We hope it hasn’t inconvenienced you in any way. Have a blessed day.”

The detective and medical examiner shook their heads in disbelief before continuing their unpleasant tasks.
