I grew up in a small sub-division called, Bradley Forest. We had two country stores, separated by a hill –the distance of about one-hundred feet. At the top of the hill was Merly’s Market and at the bottom of the hill was Catherine’s Corner Store.
Merly’s Market was closer, but we didn’t go there. It was owned by a man who used cruelty as his guide. He was mean to his wife and children. He was mean to his dog and he was mean to his customers. We walked the extra distance to Catherine’s Corner Store, even in the freezing cold of winter. Catherine was a kind soul. She greeted each customer with a smile and a ‘good day’. She openly kissed her children, and gave out free candy on Halloween. It was worth the extra walk. That’s pretty much what life is about. You can be cruel, or you can be loved. It’s worth the extra distance to be loved. wc- 161
