“Beyond the Door”
One night while walking in the wood I came to where a great tree stood I saw the most peculiar sight A moon-shaped window full of light T’was carved within a sturdy tree The purpose which, I could not see. I took this time as opportune To peek inside that carven moon And wondered what could be within A place where sap and wood had been. But never would I guess, dare say What things within were underway! A fairy feast, at least, or more Was taking place beyond that door The dancers bowed and swirled and swayed While drummers drummed and pipers played I clapped my hands and laughed with glee But suddenly … they looked at me! Within a wink, it all was gone The dancers, music, all withdrawn No shining window, no more light No moon, no door; all locked up tight From this, I guess, I must conclude If not invited, don’t intrude. ![]() 24 lines Rhyming couplets 8 syllables per line
