love (loves)
in a way of just pretending ~

I am confessed to no one -
not the boy
who does the lawn
or the man beyond the trees.
He watches sometimes
(in a way)
of just pretending
to check the fence.

I wave and he turns
half hidden by shadows
(did he smile).
It occurs to me lately
that I am gone -
and merely an illusion
to myself.

But I hurt
as I feel
(I touch myself)
and I believe (I know)
there is more -
more than I can explain.
A universe thrives
in wonders (I'm aware)
bigger than this -
love (loves) beneath my skin.

Laughter
rushes the silence
where I am.

The man at the fence hesitates.
For a moment
he is still (did I smile) -
and then
he remembers.

He never (really) cared
about the fence.
