Temptation
An 'estrangement poem' which describes an internal struggle familiar to so many of us...

Closing my eyes
         is of no use,
I cannot hide from its
         tantalizing presence
I yearn to reach out
and grasp it in my fingers,
to answer
         its haughty summons,
to succumb
         to my desperation.

But gloomy images of
clogged arteries and
cavernous cavities
trundle through my mind,
a ticker tape of doom.

Locked in this dark enigma
         is a sea of secrets
If I were to give in,
         (just suppose),
would l embark upon
         a crunchy almond terrain?
…or sink into
         an exquisite swirl of caramel?
…or lose myself in folds
         of plush ganache?

I know it’s a treacherous slope
from just one
to just one more…
But I cannot resist.
And anyway,
         chocolate has antioxidants.
