Long Road Ahead
The rutted road before me stretches out long and twisted.
Like an aged long black snake moving slowly closer each day.
What is left behind are the years of youth and clarity of mind.
What lies ahead is not only unknown but also unpredictable.
I continue to dance life’s quick steps and waltzes with a joy
Knowing that time and tomorrow are promised to none.
I devour my meals with passion and zeal
Because no telling how long digestion will allow this pleasure.
I have come to realize that today is mine to romance
Tomorrow is too far away to consider the possibilities.
There will be time enough to contemplate my naval
There will be time enough to rest a weary body.
I would like to meet my maker exhausted.
Not from complaining and shaking my fist at the sky.
But from the enjoyment I ring out of life each day
And the time I have not wasted having fun and making memories.
The rutted road ahead though twisted and opaque
Will not cause me to stress the future and what will be.
It will only enforce the energy that it takes
To get through it with grace, dignity and laughter.
