![]() A tale in rhyme- Baby dragon and the lizard 100 lines On a snowy and gloomy peak, Away from kingdoms and wizards, When mighty West Winds were bleak, Baby Dragon found a lizard. That baby Dragon of the realm, Was lonely, he needed a friend. His parents, the last in the Helm, Kept him always by their tail’s end. Mother Dragon was big and plump, With soft eyes and a massive tail. Father Dragon had a big hump, But could fly past the Northern Trail Baby Dragon was green and blue, Couldn’t yet do fire-breathing. Eleven years old and smart too, Dragon Mom said he was teething. So one morning he took a hike, Aiming for the snow covered peak. He threw a stone – it was a strike, He practiced it for a long week. The peak was awesome, high and cold, He could see a fort far away. Vivid colors of green and gold, Men’s fields waiting for harvest day. Weary of the sights and cold gale, He found a large cavern nearby. He felt faint; his small face was pale, And he barely managed not to cry. Baby Dragon stretched on the floor, He heard a storm howling outside. “I’ll never hike alone,” he swore, He was cold and scared, then he cried. Our baby dragon fell asleep, He dreamed of faraway places. In a garden, near a trash heap, He saw many happy faces. They looked small, delicate and green, Each one not bigger than his nail. Scaly skin that had a nice sheen, The large one was surely a male. “What are you little green creatures? Can I play with you for a while?” The big one had clever features, He raised his head and gave a smile. “I am Zoomy, the green lizard, The others are kinfolk and friends. Are you hiding from the blizzard? Or just looking for odds and ends?” The dragon thought Zoomy was smart, Just the kind of friend he needed. Filled with love, he showed him his heart, An act that was so unheeded. Lizard and friends shrieked out of fear, They’ve never seen a heart that size. Zoomy stepped back and said, “Oh dear, I think we are the dragon’s prize.” Baby dragon felt very bad, He would never hurt his new friends. “Zoomy, forgive me, don’t be mad, Let us shake hands and make amends!” Zoomy smiled, looked at the big heart, And climbed up the dragon’s left foot. “Hey you buddy, that’s a good start,” When you reach my nose, stay put” The lizard traveled up the face, When he reached the nostrils, he stopped. He felt like being in a race, His breath was loud and his head dropped. “Well done my little green creature, Now I can see what you look like. Would you let me be your teacher? With me you can come on a hike.” Someone was calling out his name, Lifting him from the ice cold floor. He woke up and was full of shame, “I’ll never go out alone, he swore Mother dragon hugged her young son And said everything was alright. He told her he had lots of fun, With lizards that came in the night. Father Dragon looked in the cave, It was too dark to find his friends. He puffed and puffed two fire waves, They could see lizards by the tens. “Who was your buddy, my dear boy? Does he have a name that you know?” Baby turned blue of pure joy, For Zoomy was first in the row. He got hold of the green lizard, And put him down on his wide face. “Thought I was stuck in a blizzard, And you were in another place.” Mother Dragon laughed and cheered, “Sometimes dreams come true,” she uttered. “Let’s go home, the blizzard has cleared, Although the paths are cluttered. When they were all back at the helm, Mom said, “It’s time to celebrate.” Tables were set by the White Elm, Baby Dragon stayed up till eight. (100 lines) Hanna September 2011
