My Hometown
I remember when … Popcorn was a nickel a bag. A movie ticket cost nine cents. That paid for a double feature with two cartoons. We went to the drugstore and a Coke was $.10. If we wanted a milkshake or malt, it was half a dollar. A summer pass at the swimming pool cost five dollars. A local "greasy spoon", sold 10 burgers. The bakery offered doughnut holes for a penny each. Gasoline was a quarter a gallon. We always looked forward to the trip to the five and dime store. The slick new 57 Chevy was the talk of the town. High school athletes were their letter jackets with pride. The mixers at the high school were jammed with happy students. Boys wearing ducktails were everywhere. The girl’s skirts were well below the knees. Pep rallies were commonplace before the big games. Friday night was special in those small towns. Basketball and football provided entertainment for all. The city band performed on warm summer nights. On Halloween, retail store windows were adorned with wax graffiti. At Christmas, everyone toured the square hoping to win with his or her lucky tickets. The ticket numbers were posted in their copy of the local newspaper. Summer was always fun filled. However, the beginning of the new school year was the highlight for all.
