For my daughter Cheryl Anne - battling cancer

AN ANGEL IN THE MAKING

"Too soon, too soon", the first thoughts in my mind,
first the shock, then denial, and anger right behind.
Helpless without a love of God; compassion of friends
keeps me looking for a cure, the search never ends.

The days go by and I get through, even smile a bit.
I think back on her younger years and her quick wit.
I expected to go first, but then we have no choice -
and I do remember times that fill me with remorse.

Life wasn't easy for her, she's had her share of grief.
You'd think that as she grew older, she'd have relief.
Now the constant pain and suffering, trying to go on,
I can't accept the fact that soon she may be gone.

Grim reality sets in, and I soon must come to grips,
A cruel joke, I thought, as words came from her lips.
Matter of fact, without emotion, she told me then,
that cancer was found, not knowing why or when.

And so it comes to this, the writing, that I share.
To put feelings in words is really therapeutic care.
Whatever time we have together I will treasure,
whatever comes, God alone will do the measure.

He never gives more than anyone can handle,
Keep the faith and pray, light a white candle.
So many people are praying for her and for me -
to gain the strength to move on, to our eternity.

As she starts to drive away, I call out a warning -
"Drive safe!" I shout, "I'll see you in the morning!"
"Driving fast is how they make angels, try braking!"
"Not to worry, Mom, I'm an Angel in the making!"

"Too soon, too soon", the first thoughts in my mind,
first the shock, then denial, and anger right behind.
Helpless without a love of God, compassion of friends
keeps me looking for a cure, the search never ends.
