as we go
what it means to love ~

I’ve forgotten now the reasons
you were gone away
and where was I but waiting
each return
a promise of forever
resounding in my heart
I thought I heard your voice
(a time or two)

was there something more
something that I said
(or didn’t say)
I turned the living up
and let the memories play
pretended not to notice
aching passages
(of time)
when dancing there
I fell as autumn leaves

(I thought I saw you)
wrapped in sheets of amber
once or twice
before the sun was set
twilight burned
t’was more than days
we traded
for a moment (understanding)
answers we had come to find
a lifetime (not enough)

how many ways
have I returned
(I wonder still and do not know)
do you know
of places you have journeyed
while we sleep
the whole of life
remembers
more than sparkles on the night

planets move
beyond the realm of reason
scattered there (these pieces)
a universe becomes
awash in shades of wonder
love begins

foolishness
that trait of pride
bent to disbelieving
was more to love than living
or e’er the heaven we allowed
was all we held
enough to change the world
(to something better)

what we dreamed

a sacred light
is burning still
for reasons that we keep
learning as we go
what it is (what it means)
to love
