Writers' Pledge:Uphold Virtue & Goodness
Standing for Virtue and Goodness in Writing. Will you commit?

WE are writers with strong moral values in a world where morality is considered to be optional. We are committed to promoting and protecting virtue and goodness through our writing and our actions.

We believe that it is not enough to be able to write well unless the words we have written bring goodness into the world, but we also believe that writing well makes our message more powerful and more accessible to others. We pledge that we will consider the ways that our writing will potentially affect our readers, and we pledge to always consider the values that our writing is teaching or promoting.

We are writers who strive for:

WISDOM, which gives knowledge its power,

a W
ILLINGNESS to defend our beliefs,

T
RUTH and PURITY in our writing as well as in our personal lives and our relationships with others,

L
OYALTY to our cause and to those who share these values,

the G
OODNESS that we can bring into the world and into people's lives through our writing and our actions,

and

C
OURTESY and CIVILITY towards everyone around us, whether or not we agree with their beliefs.

We pledge to always remember that truly upright writers do not discriminate against, attack, or target those whose beliefs differ from their own.

We are opposed to erotica, writing that supports a gay or lesbian lifestyle, and other writing that supports unchastity. We believe that such writing hurts us as a community, including those who are not personally involved in such literature or activities. We pledge to never encourage unchaste behaviors or thoughts in our own writing, and we encourage those around us to join us in this pledge.

If you wish to take this pledge and have your handle added to this document, please email me. If you would prefer to take this pledge privately, that is also fine. I would be happy to hear about your experiences with the pledge, either way!
