Is there a way on Earth to find perfect joy?
How do we know fish are happy?
Do we know it from a walk along the river?
Do we know it from a swim?
Do we taste it in a meal of fresh fish?

Little thoughts passed through Pedita's mind
as she chopped the head off a fish.
She was preparing a meal for her family.
This meal would have brown rice and chopped fish.

Pedita's marriage was arranged by her father.
She was a good Roman wife.
          Her husband was a farmer.
          They had a happy family.

Pedita could never asks her husband these questions.
          It would be rude.
          Her husband was tired.
And he was too simple to know the answers.
          She asked the oracle.

The oracle told her to ask her husband.
          But, this would be rude.
Everyone complemented her on the meal.
          She felt emboldened ..
"What is true happiness?" she asked.

          Her husband laughed,
          "Look around you!"
          She ate some rice.
"I wish you could feel what I feel." she said.
          Her husband looked confused.

"What is the matter momma?" her daughter asked.
Pedita smiled and poured more juice.
"I am your slave." she said.
Her husband rose from the table and took her by the arm outside.
"Do not speak that way in front of the children!" he bellowed.

Pedita fell to her knees and begged for forgiveness.
          She was a Roman wife.
She must never dishonor her house.
          Her husband forgave her .
That evening he took her roughly in bed.

It was a joy to serve her husband
          and Rome.
