What's wrong with Average?
Average is great! Don't be discouraged.

Do you have a difficult time rating a piece average? I do. Enough so that I spend ten minutes wrestling with my mind. I worry the author might feel insulted because their story, lovingly crafted, was rated a 3.5. Is average a stigma?

Many professional, extensively published authors rate as only average in my mind. Another person might find the same author’s plot and execution compelling, the characters memorable. That’s what readers are for, and that’s all I’m offering when I review a piece - one person’s opinion. I’m not a professional author, but I know how I feel when I read.

For the most part I enjoy reading every story I select. I want to rate a 4.0, but I remember the guidelines, and know I must rate a 3.5. So, why hesitate? I’ve had authors respond to my reviews with negativity, filled with indignation. How dare I deign to rate below 4.0?

If you find your story marked a 3.5, and click over to my portfolio to check my status in the community, I understand if you feel insulted. It’s okay to complain.

The truth is, I am a returning member with a strong opinion. Nearly every story I read prior to my leaving came with 4.0 or above rating. Average ratings were unusual, so even if I wanted to rate 3.5 I felt compelled to rate according to prior reviewers. In fact, the entire embodiment of the website seemed to lose integrity, and was one of the reasons I decided to relinquish my preferred author status, and lose hundreds of merit badges. (Please excuse my pity-party.)

My goal? Simply to be honest, and feel comfortable rating average. In one small way, with just one person, I hope to level the playing field by following The Story Mistress’s guidelines. They are clear, concise, and uncomplicated.

How Should I Rate Items on Writing.Com?
Wondering how to approach the rating system on Writing.Com?
by The StoryMistress

After you read it I think you’ll understand why I rated as I did, and perhaps adjust your ratings as well.

So, what’s wrong with average? Absolutely nothing. It’s a good rating, one that gives inspiration to edit, edit, edit. Keep working, keep writing, keep trying, and watch your writing skills soar. Remember to review as often as possible; your writing will improve as you consider other’s works of art.

What will happen in the months to come? Will I return to my old habits, feeling pressured to follow everyone else? Or can I remain true to the lofty goal I have set.

Let's help each other hone our writing craft. I'm looking forward to working with everyone.
