Centuries before Tucker or Dawn were born Miss Jessica Snape was just an ordinary girl. At first glance there was nothing special about her. The only thing you would notice about was the fact that she wasn’t a looker. Her face was covered with spots, she was a little above average height of 5’9, her breasts were very small, she was very short sighted and she was very thin. Jessica was a very intelligent girl but no man would go out with her. All through High School she had never had a date and went to the prom by herself. She did have a small circle of friends but they were also the dateless ones.
There was one boy Jessica had a crush on, his name was Thomas Payne and he was in the same grade as her. He was one of the popular kids and wouldn’t give her the time of day. In her mind she didn’t want any other guy, no matter how much her friends told her to broaden her horizons.
She still lived in the same house as her parents, her father worked as one of the scientists for a company that dealt with trans-dimensional travelling. Her mother worked in a small convenience store three days a week.
Jessica herself had been a miracle baby since doctors had told her parents that the chances of them having a child was extremely low. It was a surprise to everyone when Jessica’s mother fell pregnant and tests proved that her husband was the father. Although she grew up as an only child Jessica sometimes dreamed about having a little brother or sister but she was somewhat glad she didn’t. She had seen friends of hers arguing with their respective siblings. If she had a sister they would have fought over clothes and a brother would have had other arguments in general.
One morning Jessica was helping her mother make breakfast. Most mornings they would have a cooked breakfast and sometimes Jessica would cook it all by herself. She had a bit of a talent for cooking but she didn’t think it would make her a lot of money if she made it into a career.
When they had just finished making breakfast Jessica’s father came into the room. All the food was set out on the table and they began to eat it as a family. There was something on his mind though, he looked over to his daughter and cleared his throat in order to get her attention.
“Jessica there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you,” said her father.
“What is it Dad?” replied Jessica.
“Have you found yourself a job yet?”
“No the job market’s not very good right now.”
“There’re a few openings at my place if you want me to put in a good word for you.”
“Jobs like yours?”
“No jobs like being an agent.”
“I don’t think I’m right for being an agent. I don’t think I have the right body for it if you know what I mean.”
“That’s the beauty of it sweetie. They train you and then they give you a quick injection and bam, you’re a completely different person.”
“I’ve seen those super powered people. Some of them look strange. I saw one guy who was completely made of metal.”
“Don’t worry most agents don’t have that reaction. Vast majority of them still look perfectly normal.

“Ok Dad put me down,” said Jessica.
“Good I’ll arrange it in the morning,” replied her Father. “If you pass all the tests you’ll have a job set for life.”
“Tests what tests?”
“Oh nothing you can’t handle. If I remember right there’re three in total and they’re not all particularly hard.”
A couple of days later Jessica was sitting in a hall with what seemed to be other recruits. Each one sat down at an individual desk and each one had a test paper and pencil. Jessica was feeling a little nervous at this point in time. If she failed she would have let her parents down and the possibility of becoming an agent. She also hoped that the test was as easy as her father had said it would be.
She was also somewhat daydreaming at the same time. She was wondering if she did succeed what power would she be given. She wasn’t sure whether she got to choose her power or if it would be completely random. She hoped that she would get the power to fly since it would save her money on transport.
Just then at the front of hall a tall man wearing what seemed to be a black military outfit. He was a big built man and he had a scar on his left cheek. He also seemed to be walking with a slight limp. He also looked to be in his late 30’s.
“Welcome fresh meat!” he shouted. “My name is Agent Creed aka your worst nightmare in the flesh. You are here today because you want to be agents for this well funded Government project. Not all of you will make it but for those of you who will I want to make sure you’re ready. You may have heard that it’s the easiest job in the world and at times it can be. But there are also times where you put your life on the line. I‘ve known some of my comrades to go on missions and not return. I don’t want to add any of your names onto that list.” He then quickly cleared his throat. Suddenly a woman with long blond hair appeared out of nowhere and she stood right next to Agent Creed. This had caught most people by surprise, none of them had expected to see a woman pop up just like that. “May I introduce my colleague Agent Storm.”
“Good morning recruit!” shouted Agent Storm. “What you have in front of you is the first step to becoming an agent. In this test there are no right or wrong answers, this test sees which areas you are most suited to if you are successful. The exam will last for an hour and there is no communication amongst each other. If anyone is found to be communicating with another recruit their tests will be torn up and they would have lost their opportunity. Am I clear?”
“Yes ma’am,” replied the Recruits.
“Good your hour starts now!”
Everyone immediately began to go through the tests. Jessica began to read the first question. It seemed to be that with each question there were four possible answers. The first question was “A fellow agent has returned from a mission on deserted planet, but he/she seems to have something living stuck to their boots. What do you do?”. The four answers included Report to a superior office, Do nothing, Examine the creature yourself or dispose of the creature immediately.

Before Jessica knew it she heard a loud buzzing sound. At first she didn’t know what it was but she saw the agents begin to pick up the test papers. The hour had run out and the test was now officially over. Jessica had just had time to scribble down her last answer before Agent Creed took it off her.
After all the tests had been collected the recruits were ordered into another room. Jessica felt like she was in a can of sardines and she walked a little like a penguin. She was more or less moving along with the masses. This room was a lot smaller than the one the recruits had been in earlier. There wasn’t much room for anyone to move, but there was a small corridor in front of them but it was being blocked by another agent. This one was a taller than the other agents and he was a very big built man. He wore sun glasses along with his agent uniform. He looked at the recruits and he sniggered to himself.
“This is really the fresh meat they’ve given me?” he asked. “You are by far the sorriest bunch of recruits I’ve seen in years. My name is Agent Hartman your drill instructor! I am not your friend and I’m sure as hell ain’t your mommy. What we have ahead is the deadliest assault cause ever created! You will face dangers that you’ve only heard in stories! You will very likely lose a limb and you will most likely come out in brown trousers!” Just then one of the recruits in the front row began to giggle. Agent Hartman walked up to him and stared at him. “Did I say something funny recruit?”
“You were talking about…” replied the recruit.
“I know what I was talking about. Since you think you’re such a smart guy you can have the honours of going first.”
“Yeah whatever.”
The recruit then ran through the corridor and out of sight. Agent Hartman was standing there and waiting for something. Jessica had trouble seeing what was happening and then she heard the same recruit shouting out about his arm.
“Next!” shouted Agent Hartman.
The next recruit ran through corridor and onto the course. This continued as more and more recruits began to go through the course. Jessica was near the back so she was one of the last to go. She wasn’t looking forward to this part since she wasn’t all that fit. She had never been any good at any sport. She remembered what happened when she tried to run track. She had tripped over her own feet and epically failed.
After several minutes it was Jessica’s turn to go through the course she was so nervous she almost couldn’t move. She was holding up the rest of the recruits and Agent Hartman had to step in.
“Come on cupcake you’re holding up the line,” he said.
“I’m just nervous,” replied Jessica.
“You ain’t got time to be nervous now move your ass before I move it for you!”
Jessica was terrified of Agent Hartman, he was like the drill instructor from hell. She didn’t want to keep him waiting so she just ran down the corridor, she was thankful that she was wearing her sneakers since they were ideal footwear for this. She didn’t know what she was getting herself into.

Jessica ran down the long corridor and she eventually came to what seemed to be a square room with an exit at the other side. She took one step into the room and she had to duck from a dart that came towards her. The dart missed her by mere inches, but before she could recover from this several more darts came flying towards her. As quickly as she could she dodged each dart. She saw spots of blood on the floor where the darts had struck the other recruits.
The only way she thought she could get out in one piece was to run for the exit as fast as she could. She didn’t think a room like this was even allowed for new recruits. She didn’t have too much time to think about this though. Each second she stood still increased her chances of being hit. She rolled out of the way and made her way towards the exit. She could feel her heart beating in her chest. She had never been so scared in her life.
Jessica was relieved when she reached the exit. She didn’t hesitate in running down the next corridor as fast as she could. She didn’t care what lay ahead, just as long as she didn’t have to go into that room again. But instead she reached what seemed to be a bottomless pit. At first she couldn’t see a way around it.
“Maybe it’s an illusion,” she thought to herself. “Maybe there’s no pit and it’s just a way of making me think there is.” She then took a coin out of her pocket and through it down the pit. She was surprised to see it actually go down into the pit and it took several seconds before it actually hit the ground. “Ok it’s not an illusion.”
She then noticed what seemed to be a button on the wall right next to her. She pushed it and stepping stones appeared from the pit. The only problem with them was that they were spaced out. It would take a good jump just to reach each stone. If she miscalculated her jump she would plunge to her imminent doom.
Seeing little choice Jessica jumped towards the first stepping stone. She reached it with relative ease but with each stone the distance between them was becoming greater. When she reached the final stone she thought the jump towards the exit was too far. If she had a running jump she would make it. But there was no room for her to run and jump. With her last ounce of strength she jumped towards the other side. Unfortunately she jumped a little too short and she missed the ledge. She was just able to grab the ledge with her one hand. Hanging over the edge she slowly began to pull herself back up. When she could she grabbed the ledge with her other hand and she continued to pull herself up.
Eventually Jessica was able to pull herself up and safely onto the other side. Her life had flashed before her eyes and she almost thought that she couldn’t go any further. But she didn’t want to disappoint her father and she tried to carry on. She just hoped that the final room would be easier.

Will the room be easier? Find out next time.
