INT. LORENA'S BEDROOM – NIGHT
It is late in the evening, and we find ourselves in a teenage girl's bedroom. There are about six girls in the room, and they are getting ready to go to a costume party. Pop music plays in the background. EXT. LORENA'S HOUSE – NIGHT Just outside of the house, two figures are seen running in the street. They are dressed in black, and the dimly lit streetlights obscure their faces. INT. LORENA'S BEDROOM – NIGHT A girl stands in front of a giant mirror, placing a black wig on her head. This is seventeen-year-old LORENA. She is dressed as Cleopatra, and is wearing a thin, white dress and lots of gold jewelery. EXT. LORENA'S HOUSE – NIGHT The two figures run onto Lorena's front lawn. Now we can see that they are two fifteen-year-old boys, ADAM and MAC. They approach a tree on Lorena's front lawn, and it wrap up with toilet paper as if they are stringing lights on a Christmas tree. The boys are careful not to make too much noise. INT. LORENA'S ROOM – NIGHT Lorena's wig is in place, and she is applying dark makeup to her eyes. One of the other girls, JENNA, comes to stand beside her in front of the mirror. Jenna is a tall, lanky girl, and is dressed as a mermaid. EXT. LORENA'S HOUSE – NIGHT The boys finish with the tree, and stand back to admire their work. Adam makes a motion with his hands; this is his way of signaling to Mac that it is time for phase two. Mac reaches into a backpack hanging from his shoulders, and pulls out a carton of eggs. But there are only three eggs left, and they are all broken. Adam hits Mac in the head, but not hard enough to hurt him. This shows that the boys treat one another more like brothers than friends. ADAM Stay here. I'll be back. Adam walks across the lawn and towards the back yard. EXT. LORENA'S BACK YARD – NIGHT Adam takes careful steps through the yard, and looks around. The back door is wide open. Adam grins. He walks towards the door, and slips inside. EXT. LORENA'S FRONT LAWN – NIGHT Mac waits by the tree, his hands in his pockets. He looks bored. Sounds can be heard from inside the house. INT. LORENA'S BEDROOM – NIGHT Jenna is sitting on the floor, and seems uncomfortable in her costume. She is shy, and we get the sense that Lorena is the only girl whom she knows. There are snacks on the floor in front of her, including bowls of potato chips, pretzels, and popcorn. She picks up a liter-sized bottle of coke, but it is empty. Jenna gets up and leaves the room. The other girls are too busy with their costumes to notice. INT. LORENA'S KITCHEN – NIGHT Adam walks into the kitchen through the back door. It is dark, and he can hear the muffled sounds of the music and girls on the floor above him. There is a table in the middle of the room, covered by a long, dark tablecloth. For the first time since breaking in, Adam hesitates. He looks towards the back door, then all around the room. He sees the fridge. EXT. LORENA'S HOUSE – NIGHT Mac is looking up; He has found the source of the sounds. We follow his gaze to the second-story window. The curtain is wide open, and a warm, yellow light shines out of it. He looks around for a ladder, or some other way to get to the window. He sees the tree he and Adam covered in toilet paper. It is close to the house. INT. LORENA'S KITCHEN – NIGHT Adam opens the door to the fridge. There is a lot of food inside of it. Adam glances over his shoulder, then moves things around in the fridge. He finds a full carton of eggs. He is about to take them out of the fridge, when the sound of FOOTSTEPS on the stairs startle him. EXT. LORENA'S HOUSE – NIGHT Mac is climbing up the tree. It is difficult for him to keep his footing; the toilet paper keeps getting in his way. As he gets up higher, Mac can hear the girl's voices. He smiles and continues to climb. INT. LORENA'S KITCHEN – NIGHT Adam shuts the door to the fridge, and searches in a panic for a place to hide. Whoever is coming down the stairs is getting ever closer. Adam dives underneath the table just as Jenna enters the kitchen. Jenna stops in the kitchen doorway, listening. Once she is certain she is alone, Jenna walks across the kitchen and towards the fridge. Adam looks out from behind the tablecloth. He sees the long, green fabric of her mermaid costume. EXT. LORENA'S HOUSE – NIGHT Mac climbs until he is level with the window. He moves carefully across a branch that will help him to get a closer look inside the room. INT. LORENA'S KITCHEN – NIGHT Jenna opens the fridge and searches for a bottle of coke. She finds one, but it is buried in the back. She leans forward into the fridge. Adam dares to stick his whole head out from underneath the tablecloth. He cannot see her face, only her long, dark hair and the backside of her body as she leans forward. Adam enjoys looking at Jenna from this angle. EXT. LORENA'S HOUSE – NIGHT Mac looks through the window and into LORENA'S BEDROOM, where the girls are putting the finishing touches on their costumes, unaware that they are being watched. Mac's eyes grow wide and a smile forms on his lips. INT. LORENA'S KITCHEN – NIGHT Jenna grabs hold of the coke bottle and pulls it out of the fridge. But there is so much inside the fridge that she accidentally bumps into something and foodstuffs fall out of the fridge. This happens quickly; Adam doesn't have time to react. A bottle of ketchup rolls onto the floor, and very close to where he is hiding. INT. LORENA'S BEDROOM – NIGHT Lorena walks over towards the radio, and changes the station. She is close to the window. EXT. LORENA'S HOUSE – NIGHT Mac has the perfect view of Lorena. His eyes soak in the wig, the makeup, the jewelery, and, of course, the thin, white dress. He leans in closer. A soft CRACKING sound can be heard, but Mac either doesn't hear it or thinks nothing of it. INT. LORENA'S KITCHEN – NIGHT Cursing herself for being so clumsy, Jenna crouches down onto the floor to pick up the bottle of ketchup. Adam scurries back under the table, but isn't fast enough. Although she doesn't see Adam, Jenna sees the tablecloth move. Afraid of what—or who—she might find, Jenna reaches out her hand to pull back the fabric of the tablecloth. EXT. LORENA'S HOUSE – NIGHT From the other side of the window, we see Lorena look up. She and Mac make eye contact, and her mouth falls open in shocked surprise. INT. LORENA'S KITCHEN – NIGHT Jenna grabs hold of the tablecloth, and begins to pull it back, when a series of loud SCREAMS can be heard from upstairs. Jenna runs over to the kitchen doorway, but is too scared to go up the stairs. EXT. LORENA'S HOUSE – NIGHT Mac realizes that he has been caught, and tries to climb out of the tree. But a loud CRACK is heard, and the branch that Mac is sitting on is breaks. INT. LORENA'S KITCHEN – NIGHT While Jenna is distracted, Adam runs out from the other side of the table and out the back door. Jenna hears him run out, and, eyes wide in terror, looks towards the direction in which he had run. But Adam is already gone. She shivers, then runs up the stairs. EXT. LORENA' HOUSE – NIGHT Adam runs from the yard and across the lawn. He sees the tree branch that has broken, hanging precariously from the rest of the tree. Mac is dangling from the branch, and strips of toilet paper hang from his neck and shoulders. The girls are still screaming. Adam helps Mac to jump down from the tree; luckily Mac is close enough to the ground that he can jump without hurting himself. Adam looks over the yard, and sees the mess that Mac has created. He starts to run, and motions for Mac to follow him. Lorena runs out of the house and stands on the front lawn. She looks for the boys, but they are nowhere to be seen. EXT. A COUPLE OF BLOCKS AWAY – NIGHT Adam and Mac run until exhaustion forces them to stop. They stand on the sidewalk, gasping for breath. Adam reaches into his backpack, and pulls out the stolen carton of eggs. Mac's face lights up. Certain of their success, Adam opens up the carton. There are a dozen broken eggs inside. They got smashed in Adam's backpack as they ran. They stare at the carton in disbelief. MAC Well, it could be worse, right? A SIREN sounds, and flashing RED, WHITE, and BLUE lights are coming up the street. The boys look in the direction of what is clearly a police car. They look at each other. Then they start to run. For Adam and Mac, Halloween night isn't over yet. THE END
