This Cannot Be, My Dear Monty!

By Indelibleink

Perused my inbox just the other day,
And I was saddened to see what I found.
The poetry contest - going away?
On this site, Monty's efforts - so reknowned!

Moped for a long while - did not make a sound,
Gave old entries to his contest a glance.
Now sinking in, soon it won't be around,
Should have entered more while I had the chance.

Wonder if Monty might alter his stance,
Stranger things no doubt have happened, I think.
Were that to occur, I'd jump up and dance,
Take Monty out, and then buy him a drink!

But in the "contest" world, we're on the brink,
Of losing one of the classier folks.
Though most of my entries really did stink,
Monty still grimaced and laughed at my jokes!

Still bummed by the news - what tears it evokes,
In a corner, and depressed, I do sit.
These tears I dab as a new tissue soaks,
Are for ME, 'cause now who will read this...bit?***

Held in such high esteem, by all your peers,
We thank you, Monty, for seven great years!

*** The more appropriate word - which otherwise would have appeared there - was substituted for, in hopes that by doing so this entry wouldn't drag your final contest to a level even lower than it already has.
