A Thanksgiving Prayer

November ushers in the cold
in subtle shades of red and gold.
It is a time that's full of cheer
as families gather and draw near.

At Thanksgiving, just before December,
we pause and take time to remember
those who braved the trip at sea
and started a new colony.

They stood firm in their belief
that God would grant them his relief
from hunger and the growing cold
protecting both the young and old.

Through unity they did survive
and in celebration of being alive
they offered a thanksgiving prayer
as together, their bounty they did share.

They persevered! Their dedication
sowed the seeds of a new nation
built upon a strong conviction
that they had God's benediction.

So as we gather, let us pray
that those founding visions survive today.
Let us be thankful for our land
and the principles for which it stands.

Let us band in each community
ignoring the voices of disunity;
help us show respect each for the other
and treat each neighbor as a brother.

And so, Lord, we ask now for your blessing
as we feast upon this fowl with dressing.
Let us remember what made us great ...
lest we end up sharing the turkey's fate.

Amen!
