Oh football, whatever has happened to you? When I grew up in the sixties and early seventies, you were a gritty game played on real grass. I remember watching you on our ancient black and white Zenith, the one that took half a minute to warm up before you could get a picture (but I digress). Players took the field in their clean uniforms that, by the end of the game, were covered in grass stains and mud. Late in the third quarter the second string players would start to join the huddle. It was always amusing to see those guys in their bright clean uniforms among their filthy comrades. And looking down the sidelines at the players standing there, you could easily tell the best players by their mucky uniforms.
That gritty game is gone now, replaced with antiseptic fields and antiseptic uniforms that never get dirty. Oh football, whatever has happened to you?
