Thankful
A Thanksgiving-inspired poem.

The cold sun rises slowly in his sky
His midnight matron takes her early retreat
A shrill sound wakes my senses, a pitch so high
I'm thankful simply for the chance to eat

My modern carriage takes me far to where
I toil with all my effort, just for bread
When I return, I clean and take much care
To be thankful of the solid roof over my head

I walk on two flawless legs that support my slender figure
I observe the stargazer lilies blooming in the breeze
I smell their sweet aroma wafting my way
I'm thankful for the ability to live with such ease

I may be working a dead-end job at the moment
And I may not have that much cash
But at least I have enough to eat and to get around
I don't have to go digging through the trash

I'm thankful for my brown eyes that see the stars
For my ears that hear Brahms' sonatas play
For my impeccable skin, free of any scars
And for my lungs that breathe fresh air every day
