Bio for New Horizons Student Handbook

Hi, I'm Pat Nelson from the great state of Alabama. I'm a wife, a mother of two adopted children, and a Child Support Worker for the State of Alabama. The first eighteen years of my career were spent teaching elementary school. Through no planning on my part, I found myself with a new career, and for the last eighteen years, I've been enjoying the challenges of locating non-custodial parents, establishing paternity and support orders, and enforcing them. I recently nudged and coaxed my two supervisors to trust me with a project I've thought about for a while.

Beginning in March of 2012, I became the Child Support Client Help Line for our county. All phone calls are now routed to me where the caller hears a courteous and respectful voice. The job description has written itself and is quite different than I anticipated. I feel a tremendous obligation to answer every single call that I can.

I was shocked and honored when Karen asked me to consider teaching Punctuation Station. I didn't have to think about it. I knew I wanted to do it. I was blessed to have the opportunity to take Comma Sense with Winnie in the 2011 Fall Term. She really helped me get a foothold on the comma rules. I studied her teaching methods as much as I studied punctuation rules. She is an awesome mentor and a great friend.

I'm excited about my teaching my second term. I learned a lot my first time as a teacher in the virtual classroom. I spent my break making my lessons and assignments even better. Whatever you guys learn from won't match what I learn from you. You will be my ruler to measure how my lessons, assignments, and teaching methods hold up in the arena of the real classroom.
