THE FAWN

Hidden in the underbrush, the doe feels the pain of birth.
The fawn emerges into the world, unsteady, but strong,
feeling the warmth of its mother, he snuggles closer to her.
The sun soon breaks through clouds to help the day along.

Spring comes with the sun and daisies covering the earth
where the fawn follows his mother and kicks up his heels,
becoming aware of other fawns and their mothers nearby.
A wondrous friendship formed between, a good life seals.

Summer comes with the early blooming of his first love.
Blue skies and an urge to travel beyond his mother's gaze.
Stronger now, the world opens up to him, a paradise born
of a fawn now as tall as his mother, a sight sure to amaze.

Fall comes too soon, the forest is now ablaze with color.
The young buck has sprouted two fine horns, a big trophy
as the young hunters flock into the woods with their guns
and the deer take to the wooded hillsides, moving swiftly.

Winter comes, and there in the forest, a doe mourns her son,
and so it comes to this, a life short-lived, the loss too soon.
Nature has a way of healing, and yet the heart of a mother
will not remain broken, for life will go on under a new moon.

The doe remains by the place where her son was taken,
until the lifeblood of her own wounds soon take another toll.
The Spring will come again, the birds will still be singing,
God will open up His Heaven, to take home another soul.
