The Life He Almost Lived
A guy who embraced what he was but lost the chance for the life he really wanted.

The life he almost lived had he reached for different things
Would have been a life fulfilled and the happiness it brings

But others convinced him what to do; his decision was not his own
Their shadows over ran his soul his spirit has never shone

They told him what he was and how he should live his life
His world became unhappy and pummeled hard with strife

He searched for many years to find all that was foretold
He embraced the style designed for him but only found it cold

He did what they said to do now he is sad and full of shame
He hides inside the loneliness with only himself to blame

There is no way to fix his mistakes and all that he’s done wrong
His heart will not let him forget and his memories are far too long

They said this is who you are accept it now and shout out loud
But he only found embarrassment; of this, he was not proud

He tried very hard to do the things the others said he should
He hoped and prayed it wasn’t true; God, please change this if you would

Nothing in this world could predict how it was he would be born
An endless battle rages inside and from sanity he is torn

He cannot change who he is it doesn’t work that way
People often avoid and shun him just because he’s gay

That was not the choice he had there was no decision to make
It was going along with the crowd that was his big mistake

The path laid before him promised love and laughter forever more
But the journey only brought regret for the losses he would endure

His father doesn’t bother with him, his sister feels the same
His mother wants him to go away and never calls his name

There is nothing wrong with what he is for some it’s a wonderful life
He never gained his manhood; he’ll never have children and a wife

He should have married the girl he loved way back in high school
Maybe then he would have been a prouder man instead of a fool

The girl he should have married had he been a different man
Is the girl he’ll love forever more her memory he won’t ban

She passed away not long ago now the dream is completely lost
The life he almost lived is gone and happiness was the cost
