Even the bright crescent of the moon, waning overhead this cloudless night, seemed dull in the background of the blazing mansion. Standing at the edge of the emerald lawn, gazing out at the now brilliantly glowing structure, a shadow watched. All but its outline remained invisible as the flames projected the still figure against the pine forest. No other soul witnessed the skeleton of oak beams suddenly topple into the ashes. This mansion was rather famous around the town, though few knew the truth about those who lived within it. “Now they will see.” The shadow smirked and turned to venture back across the massive property to where the jeep was parked on the side of the only road for miles. Footsteps echoed through the autumn leaves, only the moonlight was needed to guide the way. As the jeep stretched into view, a boy became visible in the passenger seat. He was tall for his age which was just over 11. He remained sleeping as the figure glanced back to the woods, listening. The moon was no longer visible through the thick tree line. The smell of lingered on the worn, dark leather jacket.

That’s when the sirens became audible from the direction of town. The boy jerked awake as his eyes lit up questioningly. He yawned once, stretching his arms above his head. He asked quietly, “Can we get pizza now?”

“We’ll be eating well from now on. No worries.”

The driver got in and started the ignition. After all the skepticism and careful planning there was little doubt that this would be a success. The only query was when the boss would find it appropriate to execute the next stage of the plan. Until then there would be solace, starting with a well deserved meal.
