The Ancient Predators of Darkness
by
Keaton Foster

"Many terrifying creatures hide within the folds of certain nothingness."

*Vignette5* *Vignette5* *Vignette5* *Vignette5* *Vignette5*

The moon stands tall in the kingdom of the ancient predators of darkness. The light of such a celestial indicator is easily placed in doubt by an endless bank of clouds rolling in from the east. No stars shine bright. No messages from the heavens can be read. Only a cold, eternal nothing lingers true.

The air is thick and the heat is stifling. An old thorny tree stands as it has for many of seasons, deep within its branches inevitability hides. An increasingly ominous weight of true darkness further cascades across a shattering sky. Thunder rips the distance as bolts of God's anger split the heavens above.

Frozen shadows of unseen creatures driven to kill are for a brief second brought into light. To those with a keen eye and a deeply woven desire to survive such ghastly predators of the end appear as nightmares made real. They flee, running for their lives they offer no warning to those of their fellow kind that are about to face certain doom.

The few remaining beast of burden graze, blissfully unaware that death stalks the perilous Savannah. The grass is succulent and their own desire to fill their gut has made them easy prey for such a killer as the one that hides in the branches of the old thorny tree.

The leopard of blackness is his name. A name given to all of his kind that have been blessed with a suffocating coat of blackness. He has spots like other big cats, but his are pointless against such a backdrop of nothingness. The genetics of his being makes him one of the most frightening creatures that stalk the savannah.

The leopard of blackness conceals himself inches away. His yellow eyes shine like jewels in the crowns of kings. His black coat hides his true shape. He roars in silence as he prepares for the feast. He sneaks ever so close to his meal of flesh and blood. The beast of burden are blissfully unaware of their role in the madness that is about to transpire.

The leopard of blackness digs his dagger like claws deep into the bark of the old thorny tree. He prepares to leap. The machine of his being is quickly set into motion. The powerful muscles in his masterfully created body are but only a small display of his absolute magnificence. His hunger propels him forward. The fear of absolute death causes the beast of burden to scream, breaking the silence of proximity.

The full weight of the monstrosity that he is will be felt with a crushing blow. If they could only run, if only they could only hide, there will be no time for such pointless attempts at avoiding the end. Such beast of burden are made to die. They serve little purpose except to feed the madness of this place, of his shape. Their blood will stain the ground red, soon after their death there will be nothing left of them to know that they existed at all. The leopard of blackness and his kind will remain because they are the true masters of such a foreboding wilderness.

A large wildebeests screams in agony, the few left of his fellow kind quickly abandon him. Into the perilous darkness, they flee. The leopard of blackness digs his dagger like claws deep into the back of his soon to be had feast. The frail wildebeest falls to the ground under the weight of such terror. He whimpers, and whines as the leopard of blackness bites down into his neck, crushing all that he is.

Instantly the wildebeest goes as silent as death entails. All that is heard next is the snap of his spine. With one run of his claw, the contents of the wildebeest body spill out onto the tall, jaded grass of the savannah. The leopard of blackness roars a deafening scream of certainty. His roar carries across the great vastness of his kingdom.

All animals, feast and foe know that they are safe for a brief time. They know that his call means that his hunger has been met. The leopard of blackness begins to devoir the wildebeest, savoring each and every morsel of his prey. With great precision, he carves succulent meat from bone and before long there is nothing left of the wildebeest but a shattered body once called home. As soon as he is done, the leopard of blackness slips back into the nothingness he calls his kingdom.

In such a place as the savannah, the ancient predators of darkness will remain as they always have, kings in the realm of madness they master. Many of nights will come and the leopard of blackness will hunt to feed his hunger and his rage. Many deaths will transpire in such a dangerous place of ends.

There will be no denying the true shape of those who command such eternal madness…
