For your writing assignment this week, select the best of your What If . . .? scenarios and write a 300 to 500 word scene for your story. Be sure your scene includes the initial IF and your answer to what happens as a result of it.
What if Sue made a friend in the library? They can take time getting to know each other, exchange phone numbers, stay in touch. The friendship can also turn into a relationship. They can discuss books and philosophy. Sue plonked down on to the seat in the reading room. The guy sitting next to her looked up from his book. He had deep brown eyes, dark brown hair and seemed to be in his early 20s. He was smiling at her. She smiled back and was returning to her book, when he said "What a weather, huh?" Sue wasn't in the mood for a conversation but didn't want to seem rude. She replied, "Yeah." "Hi. I am Nick." "Sue." "Haven't seen you before. You don't come here often, do you?" "No, I just got my membership card." "Ah, what is that book you are reading?" Sue picked up every little bit of her patience to stop herself from yelling back, 'Why should I tell you? Can't you mind your own business?' She picked up the book and showed him the cover. "Ah, that one. It's a lovely book." "It is?" She wondered if he was faking it. "Yes, I especially love how the characters meet each other and then fall apart." "Wait, don't tell me all about it, let me read it first", she smiled, a bit relaxed now. Nick was about to say something when the librarian came up to them and said, "Do you mind, this is a library?" Sue flushed, 'Oh God! I knew this would happen. So embarrassing." "Sorry", both of them said at the same time. After the librarian left, Nick whispered, "Would you care for a coffee at the cafe outside?" "Umm.. sure.", Sue smiled.
