Chapter 1
“Oh. That is so not cool.” Holly stared into the mirror and a stranger stared back. She should have known that it was unwise to look in the mirror with the light off these days. Her skin shone pearly white in the darkness; it seemed to give off its own light – she was that pale. Holly proceeded through her usual routine of pulling down the bottom lid of her eye and starring at the reddening iris. “Erghh!” Holly then pulled up her top lip to exam her lengthening canines with a disgusted expression. Then she poofed up her hair, popped in the light brown lenses and left. That was the extent of her preparations for the outside world these days. Practically the only perk of the change she was going through was that it came with an in built wow factor, or the ‘sirens call’ as Alvis called it. Holly snuck to the car, hoping to sneak out to buy something fizzy, containing an awful lot of sugar. Knowing full well that Alvis had forbidden her from drinking them, when a deep, sudcutive voice, issued from beside the car; “You can’t avoid me Holly. That’s the problem with what we are.” A familiar smell enveloped her, ensnaring senses that the change had heightened so much. Speak of the devil. She smiled her small smile, the one that perked the corners of her mouth in the most curiously beautiful way that it forced a smile to wrinkle Alvis’s own mouth. “That is so not ‘the problem’ with what we are.” Holly said, rolling her eyes as she locked the door behind her. Suddenly Alvis was beside her; putting his hands either side of her hips and trapping her against the door, leaning so close that his lips almost brushed hers “You have to stop hating what we are.” He whispered. Then he moved away, leaving Holly breathless. She sighed, “Stop doing that!” Hitting him playfully, she continued to the car. “You know I hate it” “What that I use my talents to make you so…?” “Annoyed?” “Distracted.” “I’m not distracted I’m just…” She never finished the sentence because Alvis had moved closer to her again. Capturing Holly in the inferno of his blood red eyes, making her weak kneed as she gazed into the endless tunnels. “Just what?” He blinked and the spell ended. “You’re so human sometimes it disgusts me.” “Well I am aren’t I? You said it takes about sixth months for me to completely change.” “And it has been two months. I have never met anyone quite like you.” His eyes grazed Holly's beaming expression, her intense, intelligent eyes and her brown hair, tinged with red. He found that a smile had crawled unconsciously across his face again. “Why thank you.” She winked. “That was not a compliment.” “Whatever.” She started the car. Alvis pulled down the passenger side mirror to fiddle with meticulously spiked hair. “I really do hate this century, women are the drivers,” he said pointedly as he watched Holly swerve to avoid a curb, “and men are insulting them when they insist upon driving.” “Not all women are as bad drivers as me.” “No, you do indeed manage to put all of them to shame.” Holly smiled at the ribbing but put two fingers up at him all the same. “So what are we doing today?” “At last! She shows some enthusiasm for learning how to be a vampire.” “Only because I don’t have actual school today. I still can’t believe we have to learn how to be vampires.” “Well there is much secrecy surrounding vampires, it’s what were famous for. The tacky, dark, emo image you've been fed in recent times has been encouraged by us. We hide in plain sight. After all, it does seem to make you teenage girls ever so happy." “There’s nothing wrong with it you know.” She waggled her eyebrows provocatively. “What did teenage girls do in 'your day’ to indulge?” “Teenage girls were married; the word teenager is a fairly recent invention.” Holly rolled her eyes; Alvis was very old and considered himself a wise man because of it. As always, she used the only weapon she had to puncture his ego: teenage sarcasm. “Really? Things have changed in the six hundred years since you were human? Whod’ve thought it eh?” “Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit Holly. Turn left here.” “And yet it is so effective at annoying you... wait. Turn left? But that’s to Roberts’s house.” Alvis didn’t reply. “No! No way. I told you I was not going near him again.” Holly had pulled to the side of the road, looking at Alvis defiantly. He sighed. “It’s not normal to have absolutely no relationship with the vampire that turned you.” “I am anything but normal.” Alvis snorted “You’ve got that right.” She looked out the window, Alvis couldn’t see her face but he knew the frown that would now be creasing her forehead. “Holly? You need to see him occasionally; it is him who is supposed to be teaching you all this after all, not me.” “But I prefer you, that’s why I chose you to teach me.” “I know. But if I hadn’t been there at that gathering and you hadn’t seen what I can do, you would never have chosen me. You would have had to make do with Robert.” “I hate him.” Alvis looked at her with interest for a moment; head cocked curiously like a dog. “Strange.” “What? What’s strange?” “Normally you feel a pull towards the one who turned you. You cannot help but want to be with them; sometimes it even creates love, or a friendship that endures for centuries.” “Yeah but that’s not a real feeling is it? It’s instinct. You’re in a new world, feeling new things, you’re not part of the majority any more so your instinct is to seek another for protection. That and the power of blood, you know, your blood being in their veins and theirs in yours. It’s not real love or friendship.” Alvis’s gaze had intensified as she talked; he was utterly transfixed. She defied the very basic laws of their kind through logic. “Perhaps your right.” “Think about it though, vampires rarely turn someone out of chance these days; you’re too careful. You only turn friends, family and lovers. How do you know that the turning doesn’t just amplify feelings you already had for that person?” Now Alvis was genuinely impressed, she might even have a point. “Fair enough. You don’t like him but we do need him for this. Please Holly, I promise we won’t be long... You’ll even get a subway as a reward.” His red eyes twinkled cheekily at her. Holly, realising that he was making fun of her, started to drive off with renewed energy. Telling herself off for being so dramatic as she drove. Alvis smiled, challenging her was always more effective than sympathy. “By the way,” she said as they drew up at Robert’s “even though you were taking the piss, I still want that subway.” She jumped out of the car so fast; it looked as though it had shocked her. That was Holly’s way; she was always tense and never still. Sighing, Alvis slowly left the car himself, a slow grin crawling across his face as Holly's foot began to jiggle impatiently. When he was ready he turned to her and impatience had been replaced by defiance once again. Sighing, once again, he walked round the car to her side, looking into Holly's wide eyes. This time he enveloped her in a soft, caring gaze, offering her his hand. This time it was Holly's turn to sigh, letting those eyes snare her in, letting him take charge. It was a mark of how must she trusted him. Before they reached the door he turned to Holly, his face grave and serious. “Today is important Holly.” “Why?” “Because you are important.” “You flatter me. But I don’t get it. Why am I important?” She never did ‘get it’. It was something that Alvis often observed in the people of this time. They could not accept criticism but nor could they accept praise. And Holly, she was the worst for that; so neurotic that she’d rather be given criticism, her highly intelligent brain had never been able to grasp the fact that she had been given a gift for a reason. He smiled widely “You’ll see. It’s been officially two months since you were turned.” “Really? Wow… um, that’s important because?” “Certain things should surface now.” “Why do we have to go to Robert’s to discover them?” “Normal people would be excited by that but you, you find something to pick at.” “I’m not picking.” Rolling his eyes Alvis took her hand in his as he rang the bell. “Good morning grumpy and chipper.” Robert greeted them with his customary smarmy sarcasm. “I’m not chipper!” “I am not grumpy!” They said it simultaneously. “Ever heard of denial? Please, take a seat. Anyone need a drink?” He held up a glass phial with a glinting, dark red content. “No thank you and Holly won’t be having any either.” He turned to Holly, with an expression reminiscent of someone chewing a lemon. “Can’t you smell that? Donated blood, packaged and ready to drink; it’s the fast food of our kind, beware of it.” It was then he noticed that Holly had remained frozen in the doorway, pinching her nose. Alvis frowned. “It doesn’t still smell bad to you does it?” “No. It, it smells good this time.” “And? What’s the problem?” Robert asked pouring himself another glass. “That’s the problem. I don’t want it to smell nice. I want it to stay disgusting.” Holly was looking at the blood with terrified, wild eyes. Alvis walked over to her, placing his hands on her shoulders he said “One day it is going to be what sustains you Holly. You have to except that.” “There’s never been a vampire anorexic?” She smiled cockily but the wild look didn’t leave her eyes. “Ever met a fat vampire?” Alvis replied, smiling and gazing into her eyes with an expression that could soften hearts much stronger than Holly’s. “Blood is all we need. We do not drink more than is necessary; we do not indulge in it.” “But we still have to drink it.” She whispered wearily. “Yes. We do. And there is nothing we can do about that.” “I know.” She murmured. “Now, come.” Holly followed where Alvis gestured and stood in the centre of Roberts’s living room. Robert stood beside Alvis facing her, both looking at her intensely. “What’s supposed to happen?” “Were looking for signs. Why aren’t her eyes changing colour?” Robert asked. “She wears contacts.”Alvis rolled his eyes at Robert. “Signs of what? And yeah, I wear lenses to cover up that stupid red; I had a gorgeous natural eye colour” “Wow, you talk way too fast. Chill. We’re looking to see if now is the time.” Robert said, in irritating 'surfer' tones. “Time for what?” Holly glowered at Robert. She hated him. Even before he was turned at the beginning of that year, before Robert had turned her accidentally when she'd found him wounded, they had a 'history'. They were together and it hadn't ended well. Now because he had turned her they were tied together forever, even though she'd rejected him and declared Alvis her chosen teacher. The effect of choosing created a bond between them that was soul deep and almost irreversible; Holly would have happily forgotten him at Alvis’s side. Alvis insisted that they involve him though; it was like a repeat of the custody arguments her parents used to have, where she ended up visiting her dad out of obligation. After a few more minutes of staring, Holly suddenly exclaimed “God! I wish you’d just let me die after you drained me.” “No you don’t.” Alvis replied in the same soft tone he had used before. His eyes were doing that thing that always made Holly feel like he could see into her mind. "It wasn't your time to die Holly, I couldn’t have left you.” Robert had interrupted, breaking the spell that had fallen when Alvis’s gaze had fallen upon her. “So that’s why I’m here? Pity?” Robert sighed impatiently. “No.” Holly made a sarcastic snort of derision. “Fine. I know you won’t listen to me. Alvis, please explain to Holly why I could not let her bleed to death, beside the fact we actually did love each other once.” He stormed from the room, slamming the door and leaving a stunned air in his wake. Holly looked as though he had just slapped her. They never brought up their past together. After a few moments, she recovered herself, the shock moulding itself into a malicious smile. Holly strode to the door through which Robert had left and screamed “WELL WE BOTH KNOW WHY THAT FUCKING WELL ENDED DON’T WE! DON’T YOU DARE PUT THIS ON ME.” She waited, panting hard in the doorway for a least a minute, as though hopeful of a reply. When one didn’t come she walked back to Alvis, meeting his stern glare with a slightly sheepish expression. “Holly...” “Don’t.” She held up her hand and cut him off. Possibly the only creature, supernatural or not, who could have silenced Alvis. Sometimes he forgot the power she held within her skinny frame. When she was angry, however, it seeped into Holly words, unbeknown to her of course. “He shouldn’t have brought it up. If he had given a damn about me, he wouldn’t have done what he did. He can’t go pulling the love card now.” Alvis pulled her to him. She resisted at first but then accepted the embrace. Stepping into the scent that reminded her of safety and power, she felt some of the sudden anxiousness that filled her lessen. “You have been injured too often to see it, Holly, but a man makes mistakes, like anyone. The fact that he still cares for you, although it does not absolve him of his crimes, should afford him some courtesy on your part. He insists upon his involvement in your change, not I.” “Fab.” She muttered, even though this was a surprise. Alvis had never even hinted to her that his insistence on involving her maker was due to Robert and not himself. Alvis broke the hug, placing his hands upon her shoulders instead; he sighed and locked his eyes on hers. “There is a reason for everything that passed between you and Robert. It goes from long before you were turned but it not my place to explain those details. I can enlighten you as to why he could not help but turn you when he you found him half-dead.” She raised her eyebrows sceptically but did not interrupt. ”Your blood sang Holly. Do you understand the significance of that?” Holly shook her head. “That is what is so special about you; you’re blood called to every vampire in this area, your very soul was begging to be turned.”Holly’s eyes were filled with confusion still. “There is a world you never knew about, it surrounds you, vampires are not the only mythical creatures that are real. There are many other supernatural’s you never knew about. And things are very, very wrong in that world.” “Wrong?” “There is a war Holly. One that is centuries old. Vampires no longer fight within it as a collective but as we are one of the more powerful supernaturals, we have a duty to prevent further bloodshed.” The irony of vampires preventing bloodshed didn’t seem to register in Alvis’s eyes, so Holly decided not to bring it up. Instead, she struggled to comprehend the fact that she’d somehow been thrown into the middle of a war. “What have I got to do with any of this? What has Robert and I got to do with this? What has my blood got to do with this?” “Your blood sang; it’s a way that a calling, soul deep, can be sensed by others. Any magical being could have reached you and made you one of their own. You could have been forced to choose a side.” “Just because my blood sang?” “You were a powerful human.” “I was not!” “You were. Not in a physical sense. But didn’t you always know things about someone before they were said? Weren’t you always able to hold a room full of people’s attention almost effortlessly? Those are symptoms of what lay dormant in your brain Holly. You’re incredibly powerful and the change will help bring it to fruition- which is why your blood sang. It’s a natural instinct that your blood would call, so that you powers would be realised and, therefore, it was a natural instinct that caused Robert to turn you; despite his every desire that you’d remain human. When Robert lay dying, he was powerless to the call of your blood. However, by turning you he has saved us a great deal of effort. We have been watching over you for a long time...” Alvis hesitated then, Holly interrupted fiercely. “Alvis, are there more secrets about me? What are you not telling me this time?” Alvis scowled, he had been forced to lie on occasion, if only to prevent the shock of discovering whom she was destined to be all at once. “Robert played a part in your protection, as well as me. However, he has asked me to leave the telling of that story until you are both ready to hear it.” He captured Holly’s gaze, within the intensity of his. “Listen to me.” He saw the apprehension in her eyes that always formed before a potential compliment. “You are important.” “Why! Why can’t I just be normal? That’s all I’ve ever wanted Alvis.” She spoke with strength, despite her quietened tone. Nevertheless, Alvis saw past the set jaw line and determined expression; he saw the pleading in her eyes. “Normal, is one thing you will never be Holly. That would be weird.” Robert voice sounded as her as he re- entered, looking diminished. Alvis gave Holly a broad smile, the one that made his eyes glint. “Indeed it would.” Holly rolled her eyes and made a mock sick noise “Oh shut up the both of you.” Alvis and Robert glanced at each other grinning in a way that was far to understanding for her liking. “Wasn’t there a point in this meeting, before the soap opera began?” “Yes.” Alvis’s voice suddenly returned to a brisk and business like tone. “Please, close your eyes and breathe deeply.” She did as she was told because besides Alvis’ power, Holly trusted him. Her trust was not easily earned either. “Now simply imagine an object being lifted up.” “What?” “Humour me Holly please. Just picture an object moving into the air.” The remote flew from the sofa and hit Robert on the back of the head. “Ouch!” “What happened?” Holly asked, her eyes snapping open; Alvis was grinning again. “What was that for?” Robert asked Holly indignantly. “He asked you to picture something being lifted up, not slamming it into the back of my head.” Holly grimaced apologetically “Um, well I was wishing you weren’t watching and…” “Pictured the object hitting my head?” “Well sort of.” Holly shrugged, turning to see Avis’s shoulders shaking with mirth. “As always Holly you provide me with no end of entertainment.” Alvis said, trying to contain himself under Roberts glare. Noticing the restraint, Robert smiled sarcastically. “Right, she's barrel of laughs.” She smiled widely, a cheeky twinkle lighting her eyes. Until her brain caught up with what had happened. “Wait. I moved the remote with touching it. How… how is that even possible?” Alvis grinned back at her. “Feel free to try again. I am sure that you are capable of much more than hitting Robert.” “I bet she is.” Robert muttered. Holly, who had already closed her eyes when Alvis had spoken, opened them only moments after this to see Robert buried under a mountain of objects. Beside which Alvis stood, completely unharmed and bent double with laughter. It seemed that every small object that could be thrown had found its way to Robert. Almost concealing his legs, the pile was so high. Holly couldn’t help herself, she had to laugh. Stumbling her way to Alvis, they clutched at each other whilst Robert fought his way out, only to slip on the things that had covered him moments before. It took a good five minutes for him to extricate himself and by then Holly and Alvis had been rendered useless; clutching their sides upon the floor, tears streaming. “Alvis, do you realise what this means?” Robert asked impatiently, after waiting for a further five minutes for them to calm down. Alvis became suddenly sober, as the reprimand made him think about recent events “It means that she is as powerful as you suspected.” “Wait.” Holly said; all humour suddenly replaced by suspicion. “Suspected? You guys have known ever since I became one of you that I would be able to do stuff like that; stuff like Alvis can do? Because of the blood calling and all that? You didn’t think to inform me of that sooner?” “Actually,” The two of them were shuffling their feet and avoiding her eyes; reminding Holly of children. “It’s like Alvis told you before, we knew way before you were turned that you would be powerful just because of the intensity of the calling your blood had. Vampires have been watching over you for a large proportion of your life.” Robert was obviously uneasy about explaining the whole truth, which simply added more fuel to the fire. “And why did nobody inform me of what I could become? Why didn’t you just sit me down when you were turned, Robert, and tell me that some immense magical ‘gift’ lay within my head? ” Robert knew the danger signs and right now Holly was extremely scared, this had been a dangerous place for her to reach when she had been human but now... “Holly, chill out okay? We didn’t want you to know because: A- you would get as scared as you are now and B- you would try to force your powers and we wouldn’t know what you were naturally capable of.” Alvis watched Robert reassure and felt a spark of something that might have even been called jealousy. His body had been so absent from strong emotions for so long, he couldn’t be sure what it meant. “Naturally capable of? I’m not a science experiment! No need for some blind test, either way I would have been powerful. Natural or not.” Alvis stepped forward to capture her gaze “Calm down, Holly, We can’t explain if you don’t let us.” Her eyes narrowed but she stayed silent. “It was never the plan to turn you, not for a few years yet.” Robert said in a softer tone than before. “Once my mistake was made, we,” he glanced at Alvis “among others, decided it would best not to inform you of your potential abilities until two months, when powers naturally begin to show. What you did without any knowledge or training today, showed remarkable and unusual control of unbidden and untamed magic.” Alvis smiled at her “You will potentially be as powerful, if not more so, than me.” “That’s just great.” The spark had been blown upon. “Just great, so Alvis, you’ve been my stalker my whole life, guarding me, protecting me. So you’ve kept a lot secret. And you, you knew. How can I trust what either of you say? Ever?” Robert stepped closer, a pleading note in his voice now. “They were guarding you even before I was turned, Holly because of the way your powers could be abused. When I found out I asked to join up.” “Oh brilliant.” The angry spark in her flared when Robert spoke. “So not only were you fucking everything else that moved; you were also stalking me in your spare time?” “Holly...” Came Alvis’s cautioning voice “I know!” She covered her face with her hands and then ran them through her hair, calming and recollecting herself. She turned back to Robert “I’m sorry. I know you asked to protect me because you were trying to do the right thing.” She turned back to Alvis. “So you were protecting me from being turned, just in case the wrong person turned me. Because I could be really powerful and that shouldn’t be left to the wrong hands.” “Yes!” Alvis answered with relief she had understood. “Which was going smoothly until idiot here messed up the plan.” “If anything the idiot made things easier; it’s not like they can kill me now is it? I’m safe from any danger” She smiled. “And now my names ‘the idiot’?” Both of them ignored him but shared a brief smile. “Thankfully, yes.” Alvis said. “You were turned, which wasn’t the plan but we ran with it. The order were certainly happier when you chose me.” Holly thought for a moment, then asked the question Alvis dreaded: “Why wasn’t I turned earlier then? If I was so dangerous?” Alvis tried to answer her but wasn’t sure what answer was safe to give. He had been bound to secrecy by more people than Robert and to much more powerful vampires than him too. Robert caught the hesitation and stepped in. “Holly, that’s part of the stuff I’ve asked Alvis not to tell you until I’m ready.” “Well, take your time. It’s not like I’m in high demand for these gifts, which I can’t know the full information about.” Robert looked thoroughly deflated by his rejected efforts to win back her favour and Holly felt suddenly guilty. Perhaps maybe there was more to what happened between them than she knew. She didn’t take it back though. He’d done far worse things too her. “Holly...?” Alvis cautioned again, noticing the danger signs of guilt, anger and fear in her features as she examined Robert. She turned sharply to him. “Yes. Alvis.” Alvis almost retaliated. If it had been anyone else, he would have without hesitation. However, Holly was not only powerful but she had some kind of hold over him. So, he simply smiled and said “Would you like to try again?” Holly smiled her small smile and the corners of her mouth perked up in that familiar, beautiful way. “Yes please.” Only when she and Alvis stopped to eat at subway did Holly voice something that had been bugging her. “Alvis?” “mmm?” “Will I really be more powerful than you?” “Probably.” “What does all this mean?” “I don’t know yet.” He looked Holly in the eyes and gave her another ‘x-ray look’. “Are you scared?” Holly smiled sadly. “Yes. But let’s face it; I’ve faced far more difficult things in my life so far than being really good at something that’s a little bit new and scary.” “Yes,” Alvis smiled sadly too “yes you have. I have watched over you far more closely than you will ever understand Holly and for longer than you know. The world has been cruel to you. Looking into your eyes, I sometimes wonder which one of us is really over six hundred years old.” “Hang on.” Holly picked up her mobile. “Let me just get off the phone to Disney and you can carry on.” She smiled cheekily at him, waiting to see if she had provoked him. Glancing at the scars still livid across her chest, arms and shoulders Alvis smiled too, he should have known better than to try and give Holly pity, after what she’d suffered; she wasn’t the type to stand for it. Alvis seemed to be watching her closely throughout the meal and it was beginning to get on Holly’s nerves. She had started to ask why just as they were leaving, when a sudden rushing feeling filled her head, making the reason for the close scrutiny obvious. “Holy crap!” She felt he self fall back slightly but as usual; Alvis was there to catch her. “What’s going on?” “We opened a doorway earlier; this is just the rest of your powers coming through.” Holly sank onto a low wall near the entrance clutching her head. “My head. It’s burning.” Alvis knelt down in front of her; pulling down her hands, he forced Holly to look him in the eyes. “Just breathe. It will pass.” “Did this happen to you?” Holly asked through gritted teeth. “Yes. It was one of the most painful things I have ever felt.” He placed his hands either side of her face and kept starring into those brown eyes. Holly’s breathing calmed as she stared back and slowly her grip on Avis’s torso loosened. She blinked and sighed. “It’s gone, I’m okay now.” They stayed starring a fraction longer before Alvis released her face; this time it was he that ended up feeling breathless. Trying to conceal his confusion, he directed Holly to keep walking, he hadn’t felt anything in such a long time… Alvis wasn’t sure what to make of this. For that second he had wanted her and that second had set ablaze long dead, very human, emotions. That fire now burned in his chest; making him feel the most alive he had for centuries. “Okay, explain.” Holly said when they arrived at the car. Alvis panicked; she couldn’t know already could she? “Explain what?” “The head rush and now the very loud sounds in my head.” “Oh, well the ‘head rush’ was just certain mortal blockages in your brain being removed.” At a glance from Holly he elaborated. “Your mortal mind did not have access to the powers that lay hidden there but now you’ve been turned and (as we did today) have unlocked these capabilities they all came rushing in one go; hence the pain you experienced.” Holly stared around. “I can feel what other people are feeling… sense what they’re about to do.” Alvis smiled. “Good. That is just part of your powers. It might be a bit disorientating at first.” “Can you drive?” “Certainly.” Holly climbed rather shakily into the passenger seat and sat starring into the fold down mirror. She hardly noticed Alvis getting in, starting the engine and then waiting for her to snap out of it. “Holly…?” Alvis asked tentatively after a moment. “Are you alright?” “What?” She seemed to wake up and after looking around blearily for a few seconds, then she sighed and slumped down into her seat. “This is for real, isn’t it? There’s no turning back?” Alvis laid a hand kindly upon her shoulder. “No, there isn’t.” He replied softly. “I mean I always knew that but up ‘till now it’s all been a game. Nothing supernatural has really happened to me yet. Until today.” “I’m sorry, you didn’t choose this and that’s always hard.” “Why would you choose this?” “I was young and much more naïve than boys of my age today. It seemed ideal then; it still does now.” “How?” “For starters I wouldn’t have met you.” He smiled impishly at her. “Oh shut it.” Holly sat up a little straighter and Alvis smiled again; he knew affection would bring her out of it. “So I’m some all powerful vampire huh?” She grinned at Alvis, “well this vampire could really do with some wine right now.” Alvis drove off. Pretending not to notice the tear trekking down Holly’s cheek. He would take her to the seer and find out what this new life had in store for her. His own plans for her would have to wait.
