Congratulations, you won Third Place in the February 2012 round of [Link To Item #character] !

Passed on since birth, yet fought over. He is a symbol for peace or war yet neither side can claim him. They have equal claim. He must choose which side for himself. Does he become a monster and wreck havoc on humanity? Or does he learn to use and harness his evil powers to save them?

I watch from my scabbard as my master sleeps soundly, stretched out fully on his bed. It is almost dawn and time for him to wake. He has been through much with a great deal still unknown to him. His name is Abner and he holds the hopes and dreams of thousands of people, in the world of which I was forged. I am his Harbinger and most used device. I am his life blood, and his defender, a reaper of life. I am his sword.

I wait patiently on my holding rack next to his bed for him to rise. He stands over six feet tall and is all muscle. I have been with him ever since his master, Malvrok, had been training him in the ways of the sword. He used to be shy and small, but many years of growth and practice had changed him dramatically. In the early days, Abner could barely lift me, but now he used me with a deadly precision that could cut through any foe in any situation.

Abner had kept his hair longer than Malvrok permitted. Now it was draped across his face, hiding his amazing eyes. Abner kept it long just to annoy the hell out of his guardian. He was a figure that few could resist. Girls older and younger swooned at his presence, hoping to take his hand in marriage. Mothers prayed that he would choose their daughters. Fathers wanted him to become their son, in all but blood, because, in their eyes he was perfect. However, he is as tainted as I, but nowhere near as old.

Abner suddenly awakes and rolls over, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. He brought his eyes to rest upon me, piercing blue, tinted with green. He grins with his toothy but straight grin. If I was a human I would have shuddered, but my steel frame was solid, and I had never moved by myself since I was forged. His gaze is piercing, almost as though he could read ones very thoughts. He sits up. Abner had checked for any traps that Malvrok had concealed in the roof, and now proceeds to observe the rest of the room. He scans the room thoroughly checking every nook and cranny possible.

I watch Abner for a tense minute while he surveys his room. Satisfied, he scoots off his bed. His rippling muscles move with ease as he works out any kinks he received overnight. He is bare-chested with long trousers that come down past his knees. Abruptly he rolls onto the bed. There is a click and from beneath the bed a blur shoots across the room, piercing the opposite wall. It is a bolt from a crossbow. He grabs me in his left hand and waits with abated breath.

Slowly, he lowers his head over the side to assess the attacker. He finds a crossbow in the shadows. He moves to the side in case of another trap, drops me, and clambers to find a rag. Abner wishes to avoid the unpleasant surprise of a contact poison. I find these feeble attempts to injure my master humorous. Years ago, this might have killed him, but thanks to Malvrok’s training he survives.

The trap was Malvrok’s, to prepare Abner for what awaits out in the world. Malvrok is a paranoid man who believes everyone is out to kill him. He is right, which is why he and his followers live in a fortress. The world outside is a hostile place and during his short life Malvrok has made many powerful enemies. If anyone knew how close Abner is to Malvrok they would kill him in an instant. That is why Malvrok continues to train my master. He’s trained Abner since the age of six to ensure he can handle himself if the need comes to pass.

Malvrok and I are now fully aware that Abner is nearly a master himself. A few final tests administered by Malvrok and my master will be free to come and go as he pleases. There is only one condition: that I, the cursed blade, go with him.

Abner loves his home. It is surrounded by the Bulldrag Lake to the west and the looming Krazon Forest to the east, which he explores with me often on days Malvrok, is running errands. Those errands tend to involve the death of enemies. The true depth of Abner’s love for his home lies in his training partner, Lois. She is a tall muscular blonde, which is impressive at the age of fifteen. Abner spends every moment he can spare with her. She is beautiful, a goddess amidst mortals, and Abner loves her. This does not, however, alter his unshakable dedication to Malvrok’s teachings.

If Malvrok tells Abner to attack, he will strike without hesitation. His technique was savage but not barbaric. The enhanced attributes he inherited from his mother help. He can be cut by any blade and not bleed, jump from a building and not break, and run all night without tiring. If anything has to be done, my master will do it. He is a fighter and will not give up until the job is done.

Abner is near invincible. He believes it is due to the training Malvrok has put him through. In part he is right. Malvrok pushes the boy to the limit and beyond time and time again. It is not what Abner thinks, but the time is not right to tell him, not until his first solo kill. The Hunters will wield us as their ultimate weapon in their bitter, brutal war against the most feared and despised opponent humanity has ever faced. I am his sword. Alone I am dangerous. Together we’re unstoppable.
