Three Days
Rated: E | Poetry | Adult | #1854572
I was fortunate to spend three days with my dad before his death on march 3, 2012. RIP

I arrived
Unannounced
You questioned, my son
I watched you smile
I answered, it's me
I went to your side
And held you close
You held me closer
I had traveled far
Across the distance
That has kept us apart
You thanked me with your embrace
An embrace that I am sure
I will never forget
I spent three days by your side
We joked, we laughed, we cried
You told me about the past
I spoke to you about the future
Little did either of us know
That you were about to get
The worst possible news
News of an end that even you
Could not possibly avoid
After those three amazing days
Before I forever walked away
With an open heart, I said all that
I was sure needed to be said
You took each word to heart
You wept for me and for yourself
You said that you were sorry
I assured you that there was
Nothing that needed to be forgiven
I was always proud to call you father
I never for a second regretted us
You assured me that I had done right
That my life was worth more
Than you could have ever hoped
You told me that my two children
Would grow to be amazing
Such sincerity filled my heart
Such words spoken by you
Will echo for decades to come
Our three days were over
I had to go back to all that I know
All that makes me feel safe
I kissed your brow, still ignorant
To the fact that you were about
To face your certain doom
I turned to walk away
Just before I exited the door
You called out to me, my son
My once little boy all grown up into a man
I will beat this, I will get better
For those that I love most of all
I assured you that for whatever the reason
That I, and those who need you most
Would be waiting for you
Sadly, that was not to be the case
Our time living under the same sun
Would end twelve days later
You are now forever at peace
All of us that loved you remain
For a time sadness will be our way
But I know that for me such sadness
Will ultimately be replaced with the
Memories of you and those three days
That we shared as father and son…
