Visit to the VA

Visit to the VA

Today I drove to the local VA
Wife’s aged father's eyes to check
These things I observed closely this day
How men’s bodies war did wreck.

I saw an old man with only one leg
Walking while sitting in a motor wheelchair
Rolled through my mind this question to beg
For answer to query, how can this be fair?

There also a young man, his fate unkind
Led by a wife loyal he could not see
Ten years of service, now he is blind
But for God’s grace that could be me!

Whenever I go to the local VA
I am taught by words unspoken
Men tell stories their own silent way
In faces stoic and in bodies broken
