Beautiful and thorny, these are great flowers.
Starting out as a seed a tiny green sprout springs
the sprout grows, spreading about thorns and leaves;
leaves spiked out first soft and green
stem holds the weight of all
narrow and tall; stiff as a brick,
touching a thorn on its side
causes a cut a needle size
roots of a rose sieze water and nutrients
from the soil to grow.

The flower is firmly rooted
with its roots deep down in the soil
the leaves absorb the sunlight
producing oxygen from carbon dioxide.

On the top in the morning
a bud opens spreading its rosy red pedals
in a circle these pedals form
making a spot for butterflies and bees
during the day and night its aroma rises
from flower to air.
