One is Enough
I recently turned eighteen, and wrote just a bit about it. |

No Restrictions It all happened so suddenly all in one day, because one day is enough
Today I can buy cigarettes, because in one day I gained the knowledge of those with blackened lungs
Today I can have sex with others, because in one day I am worthy of indulging
in cardinal pleasures
Today I can sign my own papers, because in one day I gained the wisdom to make my own decisions
Today you say I have gained more responsibility, as though I hadn't taken on that responsibility a long time ago; long before today or the day before, you left me alone with nothing but my innocence and naiveté in a world that doesn't tolerate such things.
If it is true that in just one day a person can gain things as arduous to obtain as knowledge, worth, and wisdom it was not a day predetermined at birth to be marked upon a calendar with anticipation, but an day to mourn as a day of heinous neglect.
Today is for you; because it is the day you can acknowledge with a clear conscience, that in my youth before my time I was left to gain all these things on my own.
One day was enough, but it was not today. |
