You were so close I could feel
your breath on my neck.
My skin was scented with your cologne.
Yet, somehow, you couldn't have been
farther away.

Except, for a moment,
our hearts beat in time,
our cheeks touched,
and the folds of our arms
in the hold of a dance,
for a split second became
an embrace.
We seemed as one.

Only your soul knows why
the moment did not last,
for mine wished it to stay.

When that
brief bond broke
a piece of me stayed
with you.

And now I am
empty,
alone,
and cold.
