For a friend
for friend in high school when she thought she might be pregnant

I've repeatedly
rehearsed in my mind
what to say, in the event
that I would be faced
with this very situation.
None of it seems appropriate
now that it is real.
I cannot begin to know
what you must feel
if this is how
my heart aches.

I do know this.
Ahead is a long road.
It is hard and the end is hidden.
I also know that
I will walk it with you,
to catch you when you stumble,
lift you when you fall,
and hold you while you weep.
You won't ever be alone.
I promise.
