Starla grabbed her last bag off the counter at L'Patricia's in the Northridge Mall. She and her two friends who accompanied her had been going there since they were alot younger. Destiny was by her side, carrying handfuls of bags herself.
"Why do you buy all these clothes Des? You don't even wear 'em!" August laughed. Starla an August both noticed that Destiny rarely wore half the clothes she owned, old and new.
Starla had been so involved in the conversation amongst the three girls that she wasn't watching where she was going, and just as she was turning her head to see where she was walking, she MAGICALLY bumped into the hottest guy she'd seen in her 16 years of exsistance, she dropped her bags (more out of shock than of impact).
"Oh I'm sorry" She bent down to gather her bags.
"It's okay, I should've been watching were I was going..." he begun as he knelt to assit her.
"No, it was my fault really..." Starla trailed off.
"What's your name?" The mysterious green eyed, brown haired fellow asked.
         "Starla" She replied sweetly.
The boy of about 17, was taken aback by the beauty and uniqueness of her name, "Wow, what a pretty...and unique, name. I'm Nate." He smiled and extened his hand to shake hers.
"Thanks and nice to meet you."
         "Same here."
As they stood, Starla ran her fingers through her thick, long blond hair. It had a tint of pink on the tips from when they decided to experiment with that look about 2 weeks ago. Nate took a moment to register her features. Big brown eyes, legs that looked incredible in her white capris (which took forever for her to finally decide upon earlier that day,not to mention that cute bright pink halter than went with it, but that was another story.
"Dude, Nate, check these out." Another godly boy of about the same age popped out of a shoe store with a pair of white nike's in hand. Being the flirt he naturally was, he set down the shoes and confidently walked to where Nate and Starla had met, and August and Destiny newly occupied.
This new boy had the intention of introducing himself to Starla, but seeing as how she and his buddy were so deeply invovled in coversation, he re-routed his course to the two other very beautiful girls.
"Excuse me ladies, would you mind telling me where the footlocker is, I'm lost." The tan friend of Nate, adorned in a white baseball cap, wife beater, and Khaki shorts tried his best to sound helpless.
August rolled her eyes, he was "soooo not her type". But she stood there, seeing as how there was nothing else to do, everyone seemed alittle preoccupied.
Destiny had to keep herself from staring too hard. THIS had to be the man of her dreams. But she realized what she was doing, cursed at herself and started to show disinterest in what he had to say, which wasn't much. Her dram boy was confused by the change in her vibes and was abou to go, but decided to at least introduce himself.
"Well, I'm Austin..." he started unsurely. After she gave no response he added, "okay, this is were you tell me your name..." as if he was training her how to do an introduction. He was bewildered, no girl has acted this way to him before, it was a challenge, but strangely, it was a challenge that attracted him to her more.
"Su nombre?" Austin's broken spanish made August giggle a bit, being hispanic, she found it funny the way he said it. Destiny's long eyelashes lifted, exposing her round hazel eyes, which at the moment looked alittle more on the green side.
         "Destiny" she replied coyley.
"Really? I feel that way too." Austin tried to act as if he misunderstood. Apparantly, his dry humor hadn't even chisled a hole in the small force field Destiny seemed to be building. Just as Starla had passed her phone number to Nate, Destiny took her by the arm, expressed her fakest sorrow to the young men for their sudden rush to leave but they "left the stove on".
"Shotgun!" August called out quickly, remembering her ride to the mall...in the backseat. Destiny opened the car door to her black bronco. She loved her car. She even got her license plate to say "Destiny", for both her name and the word. She put her head back against the head rest, let out a long sigh of relief and slowly brought her hand to the keys which dangled from the steering wheel's post, images of Austin dancing in her mind.
They pulled into the drivewa of Starla's Northridge home. Destiny always admired it, she felt hers was to small. She pulled her sunglasses back over her naturally brown hair which presently was caressed in auburn and light brown highlights. The other two girls were half way up the driveway, leaving Destiny the duty to close the gate at the foot of the driveway.
"Sooo, what do you guys think of Nate?" The three girls had just finished dinner and were gathered in Starla's room. Destiny hugged a pillow as she lay on the bed over looking August, strewn on the floor with the down comforter that should've been on top of Destiny (on the bed). Starla paced around restlessy not sure whether Nate liked her or if he was going to call.
"Nate's...alright...I guess...", August finally answered, "Not my type, but hey."
"Des, what'd you think of Austin? He's CUTE." Starla smiled at her best friend.
         "Yea..sure..."Destiny replied dryly.
"Aw, c'mon! Don't let the past interfere! He could be different!" Starla advised her.
"Destiny, I've watched you let many many guys slide by, but at least give him a chance." August tried to persuade her friend.
"Whatever...It's just..." Destiny's explanation was interrupted by a phone ring. The three girls looked at each other...the same person crossed their minds. Starla pushed the speaker button after the second ring.
"Hello..." she tried her most innocent sounding voice.
"yea...starla?" Nates voice put butterflies in Starla's stomach as soon as he mentioned her name. She left the room and came back with plans for a date...double date that is. Of course, when she was telling Destiny, she didn't quite mention that the date involved Austin and her. Starla figured she'd tell her a little later.
The days came and went, and finally the day before the date, Starla decided to tell Destiny.
"Des...I talked to Nate," She started,"He brought up Austin," She bit her lip with hope that her friend would show interest. Destiny didn't say anything, but she could see it in her eyes. Keep talking,Starla told herself, she wants to hear it.
