THIS IS YOUR BRAIN

Inside your skull the brain resides

compactly resting, securely nesting

waiting for a call.

It makes ready every day

to fit you for tomorrow, for pain or sorrow

or to attend the ball.

Imagine there is a little room

within the brain where workers strain

to put the rules in folders,

And catalog the memory in drawers

with files and mark the styles

and keep them all in holders.

This fantasy explains

the function of each junction

of the neuron.

Think not of blood or pathways or drawings in the books.

See,instead, neat rows of hooks

to hang the meanings on.
