Rider Of The Pale Horse
By
La Belle Rouge

He appeared out of nowhere, clothed all in black,
Riding a pale stallion, sitting tall on his back.
She had never seen anyone like him before
The day he rode his pale horse up to her door.
Was he an enemy or was he a friend?
She opened the door and bade him come in.

“I’m here to help you,” he said with a smile.
I hear you’re unhappy. Shall we talk for a while?”
“Sir I live with famine of the soul.
My heart has grown quite weary and cold.
My life is only misery
I have no one to care for me.
I work so hard from early morning light
Then cry myself to sleep each night.
But what can you do to help such as me?
Why you are here I just can’t see.”

“I’m here to show you the way to be free.
Your sorrow will be ended if you listen to me .
Here’s the only way for you to have hope.”
And with an evil grin he held out a rope.
“Use this as soon as the household sleeps.
When they find you tomorrow they all will weep
But you, My Dear, shall never more cry
Do not fear ’tis better to die
And dying is not as bad
As living a life so empty and sad.”

“Don’t worry,” he urged, “About silly notions like Hell.
The educated know quite well
Hell is only a myth, a foolish fabrication.
There’s no such thing as eternal damnation.
When this life ends all existence will cease.
The dead no longer suffer but rest in peace.”

She took the rope from his cold hands into her own.
He was unlike any man she had ever known.
Had he dealt with her kindly and true?
She felt confused about what to do.
“It’s the only way,” he said with a sigh.
She saw a teardrop escape from his eye.
Then she felt the dark man was right.
She’d use the rope he gave her that night.
“Oh Sir, my heart is filled with fear
Tonight will you stay with me here?”
“Do not be afraid My Dear
I’ll hold your hand and be ever so near.”
Late that night she made her final choice
And rode away with Death on his swift, pale horse.

The black clad man held her tight
As he took her away through the cold, dark night.
Fear began to seize her mind
When she heard another horse galloping behind.
“Sir tell me who is following so near.”
He laughed out loud then said with a sneer,
“Now you’ll learn the meaning of fear.
Our companion’s name is Hell, My Dear”

“Oh Death, you’ve deceived me. What shall I do?”
Hell will have me because of you!”
“Don’t try,” he replied, “To place the blame on me.
You were blind and chose not to see.
The guilt, My Girl, lies squarely on you.
You believed what you wanted to.”

“Behold a pale horse: And his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him.”
