I couldn't get to sleep tonight,
         No matter how I tried,
I could have said I'd rested,
But then you would have known i'd lied.

I couldn't get to sleep tonight,
         I just kept on seeing,
How weary I had made you be,
And that broke my very being.

I couldn't get to sleep tonight,
And so here's what I did,
I read and read your every word,
And found in them I hid.

I couldn't get to sleep tonight,
Though I'm mindful of the hour,
But now I have been made aware,
Of words and there great power.

I couldn't get to sleep tonight,
Your face was on my mind,
I seemed to walk in close despair,
         Holding your heart,soft and kind.

I couldn't get to sleep tonight,
Of that I'm fraid it's true,
But then I held you oh so tight,
And dreamed of being with you,

I couldn't get to sleep tonight,
         I really wanted to say,
I'm sorry, and if you'll have me,
With you I'd like to stay.

         I'm kinda getting excited here,
Still with you to pick I have a bone,
Can you please my darling dear,
         Buy a cordless phone.
