Becoming One
A poem about overcoming the obstacles to find enduring love

Becoming One

Times before
we worried so
that love would go,
before it even starts.
So in the end
not even friends
alone again,
two sad and broken hearts.

She smiled at me and said “let’s do it right”,
and I held her close and then kissed her good night.
Though deep down in my soul I want to stay
and make love to her until the break of day.

We both know
for love to grow
to take it slow,
and don’t jump in too fast.
But it’s so strong
and we both long
to hurry on,
slow down and make it last.

So we sat and talked for hours on the phone
both knowing we were safe within our homes.
But our bodies have a language to convey,
to speak those words that only lovers say.

I’ve been tossed
and I have lost
at such a cost,
and gave myself away.
Tried to be
what others see
forgetting me,
a tragic part to play.

Why do you feel so right and feel so true?
Could I share my dreams, my life, with you?
And some day we would awaken to the sun,
to find our spirits all entwined, becoming one.
