My Place

My Place

There is a place I love to go,
Though buried now 'neath ice and snow,
When comes the Spring, and it's emerged,
The sadness from my heart is purged.

The ice, the warm sun will efface
And thus reveal again the place
That lies beneath the glistening snow,
This place of mine, I love to go.

So far below the icy sheet
The frozen ground of earth will keep
Unscathed now the sheltered glory,
Reason for my song and story.

Oh! The sight, a wondrous thing!
It makes my soul rejoice and sing!
This place I truly love to go,
Lay in waiting deep below.

It's bordered by the North wood's shore
A lighthouse beaming ever more,
To shine above the crashing waves
And guide the ships past icy graves

The seagulls voice their noisy song,
Waves pound relentless all day long,
The sandy beaches treasures hold
Stones rubbed smooth, and colors bold.

The waters clear and cold as ice
Seem not to look the same way twice,
For each wave tosses to and fro
The sand, with shells and stones in tow.

The current is so swift and strong,
I venture out but can't stay long.
I marvel in this great lake's strength
The vastness, depth, the width, the length.

And when I'm there I feel so small
And cares of life I can't recall.
When my heart with sadness beats,
Then to this place I oft' retreat.

It's my escape, now frozen shore,
I long to see it just once more.
The days grow long, for Spring I yearn
Then to my place I shall return.
