Evil Awakening
(March 28,2002)

There is one evil moment on awakening when all things seem to pause
Your breath catches in your throat
Your heart stands still
The shadows freeze as a doe caught in the beam of headlights
The pause between the beeps of the alarm clock lengthens till the silence is deafening
The curtains pause in mid-flutter and birds in mid-chirp
The dog is as still as a wet statue with his tongue against your cheek
The only thing moving is the single thought racing through your mind,"Am I dead?"
Then, life snaps at you like a rubber band and pushes the play button once more,
Leaving you till your next awakening
