A few years ago, we had a sweet, young minister named Chuck Davis who reminded me of a cross between John-Boy Walton and a baby duckling.
Although he has been led into another calling--teaching--and they go to a church closer to their home, he and his family will still make the 20+ mile drive from Carmel to Anderson to attend services at our church from time to time. One Sunday when he was still our minister, he was preaching and really got fired-up. I don't mean that he rolled down the aisle or anything like that, but he DID become a little more bouncy. . .but then apologized for getting carried away. This inspired me to write the following poem: SPIRITUALLY SPONTANEOUS
With
the suddeness
of
wild spring mushrooms
suddenly
wildly springing,
an
invisible
stump
sprouts
under the feet
of
our mainline minister
who will
later
apologize
without having anything to apologize for.
