Ice Cream Sandwich
A Writer's Cramp entry about a soda shop.

It was hot that summer and not only because of the temperature in the concrete jungle of Pittsburgh. Tempers were short, gas was scarce, and my favorite ice cream store was due to close...for good.

This was going to be a hard thing to replace in my daily routine. Most of the guys I worked with would stop by the bar and get a beer or two before heading home to their families. I was a little different...I would stop on my way and pick up my dog and we would go for an ice cream cone. The owner would always have our ice cream ready by the time we got there.

On the final day there was a new customer. She was the air of attitude, and with her high heels and business suit and blood red lips, she could get away with it. I was able to look through her razor sharp appearance and saw something else and I guess Jake did also. He jumped up on this woman and not only made her drop the top scoop of her Death by Chocolate ice cream on her suit but left a few nice dark paw prints of his own.

Needless to say this woman was furious at me and my dog. I tried to apologize by buying her another ice cream cone and offering to pay for her dry-cleaning. She was not going to have any of it until...

Until Jake started sitting up and begging with his big brown eyes and his outstretched paws. There was more than melting ice cream in that moment. I saw this blonde woman soften up and then relax. She looked at me, I looked at her and I think at the same time that love light flickered on.

We walked over to the nearest park bench and we watched the sunset, ate our ice cream and fell further in love.

We still eat our ice cream together, we now walk hand in hand, and we will be joined together as joint owners of “Ice Cream Sandwich---the Dairy and Dating Service”.
