Old Coffee

She picked up the stale mug of old coffee and emptied it into the sink. Picking up the sponge to scrub the cold countertop, she wondered was life supposed to be this way? How much of her misery could she control, lately it seemed like not a lot. He was partly to blame. After work, she would be greeted with his fury that could fill a house with the sound of it. Looking at the clock, she dreaded the fact he would be home any minute. Then it came, the sadness. It never cooperated like she wanted it too, why couldn’t it hit her late at night when she was in bed. It seemed to always fill her up at the wrong moments, ruining things whenever it wanted. She could feel the tears at the back of her throat, hurting her so bad she almost couldn’t breathe. Then the click of the door echoed through the hallway and she heard him step into the house. “Hello?? Anyone home? God damn what is this mess in here??” She quickly shoved her emotions into an empty space, he hated when she showed weakness. Sighing, she gathered up her energy for another rough night.
