A TRUE VERMONTER
Can look you in the eye and smile -

A true Vermonter can look
You in the eye and smile -
Because he knows that you
Are here for just awhile.

You've come to see the beauty
Of Vermont's green hills;
To taste the maple syrup,
To see the rocks and rills -

To gaze upon the granite walls
Of quarries that were mined
To provide memorials
Of loved ones left behind.

To see the colors of the Fall
You tour around our state;
Going home with memories
And you cannot wait

To come again in springtime
When the earth is bathed in green;
The lakes and the mountains
Are the loveliest you've seen.

Where people are still willing
To lend a helping hand;
Where they give you dry humor
That you don't really understand.

Really true Vermonters
Are born here, not brought in
By dreams of building up the state
Like places that they've been.

With Yankee ingenuity
They make you feel at home
But they tend to balk a bit
If you don't leave them alone.

Their ancestors settled here
And worked hard on the land
To make it what is is today;
Respect we do demand -

We don't take much to changes;
We think God did all right
When He carved out a bit of Heaven
And filled Vermont with delight.

When a Vermonter's called to Heaven,
He may stay for just a little while;
Then he'll start his journey back
To Vermont, and with a smile!
