Silence

I sit listening to the music,

The soft melody is penetrating my ears.
Yet, soothing, these harmonious sounds.
So intense it brings me peace.
Brings me to a place in my mind,
Where I understand life.

I sit listening to the flowing melody.
The sounds come together, and slowly ebb away.
Leaving the two of us together, silent.

"That is what happens when the music ends."
Lost, I just stare, not understanding.
"What is that?" I ask, confused.
"Death," he says, a simple word.

I sit listening to the silence,

The harsh emptiness is penetrating my soul.
Inharmonious, and deafening, this hollow nullity.
So intense that I am filled with fear.
Bringing me to a place in my mind,
Where I still don't understand death.
