Lost Opportunity

In the days before my birth
I searched and scoured all over Earth
For the place I should be born
And true friends with whom to learn.

And so I found a family
Where my goals were apt to be.
A place where I could make amends
To those who had once been my friends.

And they in turn could change to right
All past wrongs they'd done in spite
And we would all work to clean the slate
That marred our love with ancient hate.

It was a chance none should miss.
It's not every day you can do this!.
This unique moment we knew not when
Would ever pass our way again.

So with God's help we made a plan
That we be born and take a stand.
To fight what won't allow to be
True friendship in our family.

To struggle hard and be true to plan,
Wallowing and distraction banned.
Seize every day's opportunity
To become true and real in every way.

And so I came to these fine folk
As memories of each one awoke
And true happiness filled our souls
At the thought of fulfilling true goals.

And for a time it seemed good
As we tried to do what we should.
To follow through with the plan Iwe'd made
And to see that all our debts were paid.

But it wasn't long before 'twas clear
We were not struggling year by year.
Wasted time and wasted days
Full of distractions and pointless ways.

Each one going his own way
No time to talk or share the day.
No time to express thoughts and leanings
Or ask now "What is the meaning?"

And so we thwarted God's great plan
That had joined us in a happy band.
We were busy bodies with no feeling
Passing up chances for growth and healing.

So I say to all who'll hear,
"Do not waste your family years.
Struggle with each other every day!
Help each other find your way!"

For every day we fail and squander
Time God gave us to strive and ponder
The reason we all came together.
Let's not let this go on forever!
