** #486514 Not An Image ** The Peasant Knight By La Belle Rouge In a magical, mythical kingdom Long ago and far away A princess loved a peasant And longed for him to stay In her life and arms Forever and a day. She loved his handsome face And eyes as blue as the sea All she wanted in life To be his eternally. She was the most exquisite jewel That he had ever known With auburn hair and emerald eyes He longed to make her his own. One day while he was walking The King did come upon His daughter kissing a peasant And he knew what had to be done. He’d not risk the awful chance Of this happening another day, And although she cried and begged; The King cruelly sent him away. He met her in the dark of night Before he took his leave. He held her close and kissed her lips As she clung tightly to his sleeve. “Don’t leave, My Peasant-Knight” she cried For tis Thee alone I need. Tis not my choice, My Lady, To ever leave thy side, But from the wrath of thy father Not even the devil could hide. But I make thee this promise Form my heart so true, I shall never love another And only dream of you. And if God will but have mercy Then I will find a way To win thy father’s favor And make thee mine someday. Until then farewell, My Love, For I must get me away. Banished from his only love To a land so morbid and drear Where danger lurked in the forest And dragons followed near, His only weapon a sword His constant companion, Fear. That night in the frightening forest His only pillow a stone He thought of his red-haired Lady And wished for her arms and home. Then the noble Peasant-Knight Did set upon a plan To impress the angry king And win his daughter’s hand. There was a most fearsome dragon Who dwelled not far from here Between the King’s endangered realm And the dark, desolate forest drear. And oft when the moon was full He’d make his awful quest He’d fly into the kingdom Snatch babies from mothers’ breasts And then he’d hasten back To his foreboding den Feed them to his dragoness In bloody, iniquitous sin. The King would be more than grateful If against the beast, the Knight did win. How and where to plan This battle to the death? There would be no in-between Would be certain death or wealth; So he calculated all the risks And decided to attack in stealth. If he faced the dragon in the open air To survive the bloody fight Twas not so much as a prayer, He’d track the monster to his den And boldly attack him there; He’d slay the dragoness as well It would be a battle fierce, Down to the gates of Hell. So on the first night Of the fully ripened moon He waited in a darkened place For the shadow of the Dragon to loom. Night wore on and despair took hold Would he ever see the dreaded one On his mission of death so cold? Finally at the darkest hour of the night His heart horrified by the hideous sight Of the monster flying through the air His helpless victim hanging there From talons sharp suspended none other Than the princess’s infant brother. Then the Brave Knight knew God had answered his prayer By giving him opportunity to spare The life of the only son of the King He would rescue the child Then reap the rewards it would bring. He climbed up steep boulders To the hateful lair And the bloodthirsty dragon Awaited him there. In the shadows glared dragon’s eyes In a distant corner the babe’s piteous cries. As his heart leaped at the terrifying thrill He drew his sword and went for the kill. The dragon fought fiercely Protecting his den The Knight thought the end Had surely come for him . With fiery breath and talons sharp The beast tried to destroy the Knight And take his noble heart. With another prayer and thrust of his sword The lair was covered with blood and gore His blade had run the dragon through Now the dragoness would make Him pay his final deadly due. She would attack him until he was dead But he swung his sword and cut off her head. He turned to the babe and drew him into his arms But then he noticed to his great alarm Another babe beside the human one A dragon young, now with both parents gone A scaly orphan, whimpering and cold Imploring eyes stared at the knight so bold. What should he do to this pitiful creature Staring at him with tiny dragon features? He gathered both into his arms A dragon in miniature was not lacking charms He'd present him to the Princess for a pet With the proper training he would forget About his bloodthirsty purpose in life They would rear him with love ending the strife Of the one remaining dragon against humankind A new, better purpose in life he would find. The infant prince was returned to the King Who was so overjoyed He offered the knight anything Within half of the kingdom he might desire But the only thing that kindled his fire Was the red-haired Lady who owned his heart The King gave his blessing and so was the start, Of loving union Of fair princess and her peasant Who gave His Love a dragon for a wedding present.
